Kostiantynivka is on the edge. A few weeks ago, we at @KyivIndependent made the 20 kilometer return hike, in full armor, to the city's outskirts. Watch our report for a raw view of the modern killzone and the Ukrainian soldiers fighting inside it.

I wrote about the rich, centuries-old Ukrainian history of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra — and how Russia’s barbaric strike on it is just the latest effort to destroy it. My latest for @KyivIndependent. https://t.co/SnvJfUXerr
Russia launched yet another round of ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv overnight on June 15, striking the city’s historic Assumption Cathedral within the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most significant religious and cultural sites.
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a labyrinthine monastery and cave complex that holds some of Ukraine’s most revered shrines and relics, came under direct fire — marking the second strike against the site of Russia’s full-scale war and only the third since World War II.

Overnight on June 15, a Russian strike set fire to the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio.
The blaze destroyed the costume workshop, erasing Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection — some 100,000 costumes and three million garments kept by generations of studio staff since the 1950s.
💔The Bells of the Lavra After a Difficult Night of Russian Shelling
Last night, during Russia’s massive attack on Kyiv, a strike hit the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra — one of Ukraine’s most sacred UNESCO World Heritage sites, founded in 1051.
Monks, clergy, and rescuers formed human chains under threat to urgently evacuate ancient icons, antimins (liturgical cloths with relics), and other priceless shrines from the burning Dormition Cathedral.
The Lavra stands. The relics are safe. But the pain and the scars remain.
Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Russian strikes are ongoing in Kyiv, as well as in Kharkiv. Last night, the Russians launched more than 60 missiles at the capital alone. In total, 70 missiles and 611 drones were used against Ukraine. As of now, 28 people have been reported injured and four killed in the capital. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. A Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra set the Dormition Cathedral on fire – a church whose history dates back to the 11th century. And this is one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date. The State Emergency Service has already extinguished the fire on the cathedral’s roof. In Kharkiv, the Russians carried out a repeat strike against our rescuers as they were putting out a fire at the site of an earlier strike on an industrial facility. So far, tragically, five people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Nine people have been injured. In Dnipro, Russia struck the grounds of a railway station, a college, and several enterprises.
Other cities and communities were targeted as well. The Kyiv, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions were also under attack. This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war. It is very important that there be a response from the G7 countries, which are now gathering for their summit – and that this response be decisive and substantive: more pressure on the aggressor and more support for Ukraine’s air defense, especially anti-ballistic capabilities. I thank everyone who is helping us protect lives.

A course of action has been approved – to increase the financial sustainability of our defense and ensure the continued transformation of the Ukrainian Army.
First – pay. We have the resources to increase pay in the military. The minimum will be 30,000 hryvnias in rear areas. The more combat missions, the higher the level of pay. There will be new, significantly stronger contracts for infantry personnel. On average, 300,000 hryvnias on the front line. Everything depends on our Ukrainian infantryman.
The contracts will be structured to ensure clarity: contract terms of 10, 14, and 24 months with clear conditions – meaning clear temporary discharge. Guaranteed terms – and real temporary discharge. In addition, payments for Ukrainian combat commanders will be increased, and this should create a positive incentive to preserve command experience within the Army.
Second, I am grateful to all the volunteers from other countries who are fighting for freedom in Ukraine. I have instructed that significantly more opportunities be opened for foreign volunteers to join the Ukrainian Army. There will be additional recruitment mechanisms to support this.
Third, further simplification of transfers for warriors, more opportunities to advance within the Army, and more positive incentives to join the defense.
I expect every element of the changes now being implemented to show its effectiveness this summer. The Ministry of Defense will present the details of the decisions.
Details of the steps we are now introducing. The Ukrainian Army is changing, and each change strengthens our entire state. Thank you to everyone who helps us. Glory to Ukraine!
