In honor of watching the Apollo 11 documentary tonight, I’m here to remind everyone that actually the United States government spends ~$2T a year on old people (Medicare and Social Security) and ~$2T on poor people (Medicaid and all welfare) while the TOTAL outlay for the entire space race program was $300b in 2026 dollars.

And currently NASA’s annual budget is $25B. So ~1% of what’s spent on welfare programs.

The entire space program - 1958 - 1973 - represents 1/6 of a SINGLE year of what the United States spends feeding, housing, and medicating the poor and boomers (and older).

Apollo at peak expenditure was a mere $23b (in 2026 dollars) a year.

While social security existed and was chugging along at ~$50b a year in the early 70s, other modern welfare was much smaller - but grew rapidly after the Apollo program shut down.

But much to the chagrin of the lady in the picture, during the whole duration of the space race AFDC (the contemporary version of welfare) spent $400B and NASA spent $280B.

But it got crazier after. After Apollo, NASA’s budget crashed while Medicare, Medicaid, and Welfare skyrocketed.

While that lady’s sign was always a lie, it subsequently became true in reverse: “Billions to feed, house, and medicate the poor. Pennies to develop next generation technologies and reach for the stars.”

She got her wish.
