I spent much of my summer in the world of Pam Antoni, a 49 year old woman who died by suicide outside her apartment in Bend in June. Today @investigatewest and @OPB published her story 🧵

Year after year, an Oregon wood treatment facility let a toxic chemical leach into a river that supplies water for a nearby town. As @ka_tornay@aspenford_ report, state regulators were investigating violations but didn’t stop the company from releasing more polluted stormwater🧵
@AspenFord_@danielwinvw@ka_tornay But @ka_tornay's also wants to know: Do Oregon parents get enough mental health support during pregnancy? Help her answer that question by telling her what you think. https://t.co/SHEkIDh8Jg
Good journalism matters: State officials investigated Providence Sacred Heart only because they read reporting from @ka_tornay and @WhitneyBryen. Officials quickly found deeper issues with the hospital failing to properly screen patients.
Providence Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane is refusing to answer questions about the safety of patients following a 12-year-old's suicide. But a state investigation could provide answers.
Reported with @ka_tornay.
Washington health officials — after reading @ka_tornay and @WhitneyBryen's reporting — launched an investigation into a 12-year-old’s suicide at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Oregon has spent $46 million fighting black market cannabis in the last seven years. Is it working? Well, nobody seems to know, including the state agency managing the funding. From @ka_tornay https://t.co/LP5oIWMaW0
NEW: Bird flu is spreading rapidly, but in the Northwest, farm workers — the people closest to the danger — are rarely tested for exposure. The latest from: @RachelSpacek (cc: @Report4America)

What all of these states have in common, though, is a shortage of support professionals to provide the care these kids need. Which means many parents will continue to fill that gap — paid or unpaid.
You sure can't paint the Northwest w/ 1 broad brush.
In OR and WA, parents of medically complex kids are lobbying to become Medicaid-paid caregivers. In ID, where that program exists, officials are trying to eliminate it, citing fraud & waste.

Many identity theft victims never see justice in a criminal court because they don't know who the thief is. People like Danielle Del Prado, however, can face a paradoxical obstacle: that she knows the alleged thief — her wife — too well.

Grateful to see the editorial board of my hometown paper @thebulletin encouraging readers to spend time with my @investigatewest story from last week about Pam Antoni, who died by suicide despite multiple contacts with the Deschutes County crisis system.

An Idaho agency will keep funding a nonprofit that’s under federal investigation after we exposed how it exploited trafficking victims.
But the state cut funding for a different nonprofit, believing its director was the whistleblower behind the articles.
