It’s easy to see evolution with your own eyes. All you need is a species with a generation time faster than your own.

I have a good example of evolution I’ve seen recently with a population of fish.

Someone released their pet goldfish into a wild pond near me, and they quickly started breeding. I often go netting in these ponds to see what’s around. Soon after the release, I caught mostly colourful fish because there were lots of them there.

Goldfish are colourful because fish breeders choose the most brightly coloured fish to breed from. The less colourful fish are culled so the result is captive populations of very colourful fish.

However, once in the wild pond, the goldfish were quickly discovered by fish-eating birds like herons. Because the brightly coloured fish are easier to see, the herons caught them and ate them at a much higher rate than the fish that were duller.

The result is that the colourful fish didn’t live as long as so had fewer babies. The duller fish survived better and had more babies.

If you net in this pond semi-regularly, you can see the population change clearly in a short space of time. After a couple of years, most of the goldfish you catch will be dull brown/bronze in colour.

The ratio completely flipped. At first it was almost all orange fish, now it’s almost all brown fish. This is because the selection pressures changed.

Humans selecting the brightest fish is artificial selection.

Herons removing the brightest fish is natural selection.

Both are evolution.

И нет до россиян не начало доходить. Это называется по другому.
Им было нормально пока их соотечественники, соседи, друзья, коллеги вырезали Бучу, били бомбами по драмтеатру, детским больницам, расстреливали машины во время эвакуации, им было норм когда били по Эпицентру в час пик, им было норм когда били по людям на лодкам спасавшимся после взорванной Каховской ГЭС, они радовались поднятому российскому флагу на руинах уничтоженного их государством очередного украинского города. Для них все это нормально. А не нормально для них то что война неожиданно вернулась к ним в дом и забрала посылки. Они не прозрели, этому есть другое слово – обыкновенное мерзкое, отвратительное бля..во, их любимое "нас то за что".
Они не против войны, они против неудобств вызванные войной.
Ноль эмпатии. Это только начало. Война вернулась домой.
