A Daughter Is Not a Burden
She Is an Honour from Allah
One of the greatest tragedies of pre-Islamic ignorance was the belief that having daughters was a source of shame. Islam came to destroy that mindset forever.
Allah says: "To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates whatever He wills. He grants female children to whom He wills, and He grants male children to whom He wills." (Qur'an 42:49)
Notice that Allah mentions female children before male children—a subtle yet profound honour that reminds us that daughters are not second-class gifts; they are divine blessings.
The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ transformed the way humanity viewed girls. He taught that raising daughters with love, dignity, faith, and good character is not a burden, it is a pathway to Paradise.
He said: "Whoever raises two daughters until they reach maturity will be with me on the Day of Resurrection like these two," and he joined his fingers together.
He also said: "Whoever treats his daughters well, they will be a shield for him from the Fire."
A daughter is not a financial liability. She is not a disappointment. She is not "less than" a son.
She is someone's future mother. She is a future teacher. She is a future scholar. She is a future leader. She is a future nurturer of generations.
When you educate a daughter, you educate a family. When you honour a daughter, you strengthen a society. When you protect a daughter, you preserve the future of the Ummah.
Parents, your daughters are an amānah (trust) from Allah. Give them beautiful names. Teach them the Qur'an. Invest in their education. Protect their dignity. Listen to them. Encourage their aspirations. Never make them feel unwanted because they were born female.
To every father: love your daughter openly.
To every mother: raise your daughter with confidence and taqwā.
To every community: honour your daughters before asking Allah to bless your future.
A society that honours its daughters honours itself.
May Allah protect our daughters, increase them in knowledge, faith, modesty, confidence, and righteousness, and make them among the women of Jannah. Āmīn.
Today is 10th of Muharram. It is the day of Ashura.
The name Ashura comes from the Arabic word for ten. It is a day that holds an incredible amount of weight across history, acting as a deep intersection for stories of survival, deliverance, and immense sacrifice.
The primary reason for fasting on this day traces back to the time of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, he found the Jewish community fasting on this day.
When he asked why, they explained that it was the day God parted the Red Sea to rescue Musa and the Israelites from the tyranny of Pharaoh.
Then the Prophet remarked that Muslims have a greater right to Musa, so he fasted and recommended that the believers do the same. Traditional accounts also link this date to the day Prophet Nuh's ark safely came to a rest on Mount Judi after the flood.
For the Muslim community, the day also carries a profound sense of grief and reverence because of the tragedy of Karbala.
It is the day Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet, stood firmly against injustice and was martyred alongside his family and companions. This side of the day makes it a time for reflecting on the price of standing up for truth and maintaining integrity when things get tough.
Fasting on this day carries a beautiful spiritual reward to help begin the year with a clean slate. The Prophet noted that fasting on Ashura wipes away the minor sins of the entire past year.
To complete the sunnah and maintain a distinct practice, it is highly recommended to pair it with another day, either fasting the ninth and tenth or the tenth and eleventh of the month. It is a quiet, powerful way to ground yourself in gratitude and remembrance.
Allah knows best.
