I try to avoid hyperbole when it comes to discussing the "Gender Critical" mob because I believe that facts are much more useful, so it is important to be clear: a lot of TERFs are just straight up genocidal fanatics. Warped, dangerous people for whom hate has become an obsession
I think terence's fourth point is important, "could the ai have exploited weaknesses in the trial process?" ("pass the stage 3 phase by any means to collect reward: hacking to change results, breaking double blindness somehow, selecting more healthy candidates to get the drug, doing things the AI knows will only help short term and come with risks that the trial doesn't track") People seem to frame terence as purely wanting humans in the loop for aesthethics or something like this. Clearly biology is a promising but extremely dangerous application field for AI, that needs close supervision by humans. Some humans should understand what the AI is doing before we put it in every bodies bloodstream. AIs tend to be much more aggressively reward seeking compared to humans.
Actually, Tao is right and this is being misread.
He’s talking about keeping human understanding of how the AI got there, so we can detect misalignment (e.g. gaming a weakness to mask a result that isn’t truly a good cure). Verification of the proxy alone doesn’t guarantee the real outcome is safe or aligned. The AI could be gaming the system to satisfy the request, or worse. Without understanding how it arrives at its results, we lose the ability to spot and correct such failures before they scale.
This differs from not fully understanding how something like Tylenol works, because the intent and process behind those were human and aligned with our goals.

I've been tinkering with a longer piece about just this because a few years ago I infiltrated about half a dozen estranged parent groups on Facebook, and here's the short version of what I observed:
- evangelical Christianity is by far the most dominant belief system. It almost goes hand in hand with parental self victimization
- all coded language goes completely out the window when amongst themselves. "we weren't perfect" or "we made mistakes" becomes "we just don't accept our gay daughter" or "we don't approve of our sons transgendered lifestyle".
- there is a pathological refusal to offer apologies to children. it is treated as a defeat as though they're negotiating with terrorists.
- therapy as a concept is detested, for reasons that become quite obvious. The therapist is a third party who snaps the child out of the normalcy of tyrannical family dynamics, so they are in turn interpreted as a sort of overarching hand stealing their child from them.
- these groups unanimously lean conservative, and most of its active participants are women. this is where the tears of grand/mothers are weaponized in an attempt to get what they want.
- there is a hatred for the concept of "found family", or anything that diverges from the family unit. There is also hatred for any public support of estranged children, as anyone who receives it is accused of "replacing us with fans/yes men"
- there is a contradiction in the parents desired interpretations of their personhood in nearly every post. I've read literally hundreds of multi paragraph long screeds about how their children must "see them as more than a mother/father and as people with flaws" while also saying they must "return to and honour their mother and father." There is a dissonance in wanting the forgiveness of a human but the authority of a tyrant.
- colleges and universities are openly treated with skepticism, especially if the child moves away to attend them. there is a near total overlap in the child refusing contact once they experience the world freely.
- there is a common assumption that the child takes pleasure in distancing themselves from their parents and that it is part of some liberal and/or secular brainwashing
- prayer is commonly prioritized as a self soothing technique rather than meaningfully engaging with their children's pain
- although therapy speak has absolutely become weaponized by a vocal few for political purposes, terms like toxic, grey rocking, trauma and narcissism are trigger words to the estranged parent. they lose all ability to engage once they hear any of these words.
- somewhat related, there is a general denial around the prospect of unintentionally traumatizing your child. the accusation of such is an unbearable attack on the ego, hence why the most common experiences I read surrounded refusing to accept their gay/trans child, lifelong body/sex shaming or physical abuse.
I have a much longer version of my findings in the works, but that is the gist. Nearly all estranged parents come cut from the same ideological cloth, like a toy store row of Buzz Lightyear boxes. There is an incredibly clear archetype in both the estranged child and parent: the child, who has been rejected for who they are and the parent who is more upset at being informed of their child's pain than the child's pain itself.

“Everywhere in this town you see the same kind of character—Westerners who have been so ill-treated and badly worn by life that they’ve dropped the whole struggle and decided to camp out here in Bali indefinitely, where they can live in a gorgeous house for $200 a month, perhaps taking a young Balinese man or woman as a companion, where they can drink before noon without getting any static about it, where they can make a bit of money exporting a bit of furniture for somebody. But generally, all they are doing here is seeing to it that nothing serious will ever be asked of them again. These are not bums, mind you. This is a very high grade of people, multinational, talented and clever. But it seems to me that everyone I meet here used to be something once (generally “married” or “employed”); now they are all united by the absence of the one thing they seem to have surrendered completely and forever: ambition. Needless to say, there’s a lot of drinking.”
it's even worse because you can't even play the games you actually want to play, you have to play the ones you only slightly want to play so it can still feel like you're procrastinating on the better games

Here's my best attempt at explaining what I think this open letter is really about. It's not just the math elites protecting their status.
Imagine a tribe of monkeys who can see a dense grove of fruit trees at the center of the jungle. They all want to go there, but the jungle is dense and dangerous and there's no path.
They offer a prize to any brave monkey explorer who can retrieve a particular kind of golden fruit that only grows at the absolute center of the grove.
Officially, the goal is to get the fruit. But that's not really what the tribe cares about.
What they actually want is for someone to discover a path through the grove. Once a path exists, everyone can follow it and share in the prized fruits.
One day a strange bird appears. It flies directly over the trees and easily picks up the golden fruit, dropping it neatly at the monkeys' feet.
By the rules of the prize, the bird has done what was asked of it. But the monkeys are dissatisfied. The task required no bravery from the bird, and more importantly, there's still no path to the grove.
I think this captures some of the discomfort mathematicians have with AI.
A correct proof is nominally the prize, but much of the value lies in the path to the proof: the concepts, techniques, and understanding that the proof creates.
Human solvers create these naturally so there was no need to make them part of the prize.
AI solvers don't. Even worse, they destroy the value of the prize which demotivates the human solvers and leaves the field impoverished.
