RUMOR | John Linneman said he heard from a couple of sources that Microsoft was very much going to continue disc support before the Xbox “reset”
He heard “Microsoft was actually very much going to continue disc support, not because they value disc retail sales but because they wanted to ensure that all your Xbox games were still be playable on new Xboxes.”
He mentioned that Xbox “could offer maybe like an external drive or basically some means. And I think that might all tie into this disc to digital stuff as well.”
Also speculated that he sees a “future where Microsoft supports physical games going forward for users that want to take their library with them while Sony just completely cuts people off.”

@prmade313raised Your take on this been the most logically. When that movie came out you would have thought it was blood vs crip. Nobody was trying to see both sides.
In FY26, over 200 million new players came to XBOX and our games, but our business did not grow with our audience. We need to close that gap by investing in what players value. That will take time, but we expect to return to growth by the end of FY27.
Microsoft has confirmed that the recent Xbox outage shouldn’t have affected games on disc. Xbox discs are subject to "entitlement checks," but they should still be playable offline. A fix to prevent this from happening again will be rolled out soon https://t.co/tV0uAPIxT7
