Sustainable battery value chains @ Global Battery Alliance. 👀 on Africa, critical minerals. 🤓 all things political economy of development. Views are my own.
It’s crazy how the tables have turned in the world economy.
Not long ago, China was attracting investment from the West to create jobs and acquire technology.
Now, Western leaders are asking for Chinese investment to do the same thing in their home countries.
Need collaboration, not competition. Neither should be at the cost of race environmental and social safeguards or developing producing countries’ use of local content policies to develop value chains.
Inability of China-Russia+ bloc to import copper, nickel, lithium, and cobalt from Chile, the DRC, and Indonesia etc. would lead to a price increase of 300%. In US-EU+, fragmentation would cause oversupply as use of minerals is constrained by time to scale up refining capacity.
Critical minerals such as copper, cobalt, lithium, and nickel–all used to make everything from EV batteries to solar panels to wind turbines--are highly vulnerable to trade restrictions and can affect the cost of the climate transition. Read more in F&D. https://t.co/4GACl71HYF
Historically, much of the gender gap in earnings could be explained by differences in education and occupational choices. However, this year’s economic sciences laureate Claudia Goldin has shown that the bulk of this earnings difference is now between men and women in the same occupation, and that it largely arises with the birth of the first child.

“An E.V. is a good way to cut carbon emissions, but so, it turns out, is a four-day workweek.”
Great take on how we need solutions from both in- and outside the current paradigm. And fast. @billmckibben https://t.co/Yc49E7dJfW
Useful reading for our #EITI2023 session today with @NRGInstitute at 16:45, NRGI's Beneath the Surface explores the importance, and risks for #corruption in the massive flows of money via #procurement of goods and services by extractive industry companies https://t.co/MasyXANa21
#EITI2023 kicks off today! We are thrilled to welcome EITI stakeholders from all around the world 🌍 to #Dakar to discuss the past, present and future of extractives #transparency.
💡 We want to know: What does #TransparencyInTransition mean to you?
Without changes to how they are made, “batteries will just be a new, innovative way to create the same old emissions,” explains Peter Carlsson, the head of Northvolt, in guest commentary https://t.co/0mCWZmIMfw
Succinct report by IPCEI on battery supply chains: #EU production, processing of nickel, manganese, cobalt, lithium and graphite can increase. Yet bottom line is: EU must diversify supply sources - in a sustainable way also for producing countries. #CBAM https://t.co/ug5LMcZkNK

Pleasure to participate in this discussion with and share @giz’s experience on supporting our partners in Côte d’Ivoire on mine closure and rehabilitation.
Environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) are critical for good #mining governance. Participants at the #IGFAGM are discussing how to diagnose gaps in legal and policy frameworks for ESIAs in the mining sector.
