Especially in dating nobody in their 20s knows what they're actually shopping for. Early on, most of us are drawn to what's visible and what signals status to our friends. Basically what looks good from across the room. The ability to tell "this feels good to be seen with" apart from "this feels good to be with" comes later, usually the hard way.
This article is the sharpest thing I've read on this in a while. She uses a sales lens: the buyer never states the real ask. "Six feet" or "finance" is what they've talked themselves into. The real requirement is never on the list.
