“But you survived” I disassociate, like a lot. My heart drops when someone raises their voice. I shut down very easily. I'm far too observant. I always feel like a burden. I isolate often. But yeah, sure, I guess I survived.
Lately, I've noticed everybody looks OK until you eventually have a deep conversation with them. And then, you'll realize that, this is a sad generation of people struggling to survive through smiling faces and pretty pictures.
When people say "suicide is not an option," I can’t help but ask then what is? If we insist that suicide is not an option we owe people real tangible alternatives not slogans. This only means something if other options actually exist.
I dislike the ‘suicide is not an option’ narrative. Do you really think they didn’t seek help or fight to live? Pain doesn’t disappear because we tell people to choose life.
As an ADHDer, this is my FAVORITE week of the year. Time is fake. Schedules are optional. Not knowing what day it is is… socially acceptable. Can every week be this week? XO, Dr. Jen
i think when you’re transitioning from being a people pleaser to someone with more boundaries it’s so weird, because it’s hard to tell if you’re being mean or if you’re just listening to your own feelings because you’re so used to this and only thinking about others.
Anyone can become disabled or chronically ill.
It’s not a choice. It’s not a moral failing. It’s not something you can “try harder” your way out of.
You can be the healthiest person in the world & completely disabled in an instant.
It’s a minority group you can join anytime.
depression is embarrassing because sometimes it makes you miss appointments and not return phone calls and when the fog start to lift you gotta do a whole fuckin apology tour. thats shit is crazy.
trying to communicate just how debilitating a mental illness is to someone who doesn’t experience it is one of the most frustrating disconnects in the world. & it’s no one’s fault!!!! still so painful
When someone you love is in their darkest hour, their nervous system doesn’t need a pep talk about how this will “make them stronger.” It needs softness. It needs presence. It needs, “I’m here. You don’t have to go through this alone.” XO, Dr. Jen
Once your grandma passes away you’ll realize she was the only thing that was holding your fake ass family together 😭😭😭 The family literally falls apart
Children don’t “bounce back” from trauma.
They bury it.
And buried trauma doesn’t vanish it leaks out later as anxiety, rage, shame, addiction, and self-destruction.
So no, kids aren’t resilient.
They’re hurting.
