US announces visa sanctions on "TPLF hardliners" for undermining peace in Ethiopia and the region. Interesting that this seems to replace any high-level diplomatic effort or visit to the region to first assess the situation and instead goes direct to sanctions. Diplomacy is dead. https://t.co/U7AEBIf5jE
“Where are the disappeared persons?”
#UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in #Eritrea, #Mohamed_Abdelsalam_Babiker, used his final statement before the UN Human Rights Council (#UNHRC) to urge the Eritrean government to address allegations of crimes against humanity, including enforced disappearances.
The remarks were delivered during the presentation of his final report to the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council ( #HRC62) in #Geneva on 15 June.
If I were Ethiopia, I would not sit down at any negotiating table with the US after this message:
"We're helping him [Sisi] with a little dam project...I think you were very unfairly treated by Ethiopia...And we'll be discussing the Nile because the Nile is getting a little emptier than it should be...because a damn was built by Ethiopia and its causing tremendous problems for Egypt."
It is profoundly heartbreaking to witness another surge of xenophobic violence in #SouthAfrica this week. Hundreds have marched on Parliament, thousands of families have been displaced, and lives have been tragically cut short.
These include at least five Ethiopians killed earlier in the attacks, and five Mozambicans who died in Mossel Bay. Thousands more are now fleeing for their lives.
To see South Africa turn to xenophobia is a tragic betrayal of the country's struggle for independence and freedom. African nations stood united to dismantle apartheid. Ethiopia proudly supported "Madiba," Nelson Mandela, in 1962 and issued him a passport so he could travel the continent. Other countries helped in many ways, including with political and financial support.
Disagreements and grievances must be addressed by the justice system and the rule of law, never through vigilante violence and collective punishment.
South Africa deserves better. Africa deserves better.
Stop the hate. Protect the vulnerable. Uphold our shared humanity.
Bishoftu International Airport, the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa's history, is being built day and night with unyielding determination ready to welcome 110 million passengers annually when completed, placing Ethiopia among the world’s top aviation hubs!
News: #French journalist expelled from #Ethiopia following reporting trip to #Tigray#Ethiopian authorities have revoked the accreditation and residence permit of a French journalist working for the #Catholic_daily La Croix and ordered her to leave the country following a reporting trip to Tigray earlier this month.
Asked about the case, the Ethiopian Media Authority (#EMA) told Addis Standard to submit its questions in writing. Responses were not available at the time of publication.

Ethiopia's PM Abiy Ahmed is expected to win the upcoming elections in Africa’s second most populous country. Abiy came to power after a wave of protests that had lasted several years.
Africa Now is joined by writer Befeqadu Hailu and Tewodros Sile from Africa Practice.
Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, stands deeply divided, facing violent ethnic conflicts, restrictions on free speech and crackdowns on dissent.
As the country heads toward a national election, the leader once celebrated as a healer is now viewed by critics as the main driver of these schisms. https://t.co/spNIFvefxi
In the countdown to Ethiopia’s June 1 election, @TheReporterET's Bewket Abebe flew to the town of Humera to report from one of the country’s most contested territories. He never made his meeting.
Security personnel searched his phone and detained him for three days in a crowded cell.
“The detention place was overflowing and crammed. It was hot and unsanitary,” Bewket told CPJ.
With journalists summoned, arrested, threatened, and pushed into self-censorship, Ethiopian reporters say the real election story is fear and the public is being left in the dark.
