Som abortion thoughts: I teach sex ed and when I explain the menstrual cycle, I emphasize that if you are expecting your period, it’s one day late, and you take a pregnancy test, if it comes back positive, you are considered 4 weeks + 1 day into your pregnancy.
In light of the draft of a leaked majority Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade, I want to call your attention to the people that would be impacted most by the end of legalized abortion across the United States. 🧵:
A year ago, a non-academic friend listened to a talk I gave. I thought it went great. My friend disagreed.
She said that academics are experts at making interesting stuff boring—and that we should all take a speech class.
So I did. And here are 6 most useful things I learned.
2000: Go to college or you'll be flipping burgers!
2008: What do you mean you can't find a job, is flipping burgers too good for you?
2016: You want $15/hr for flipping burgers?! Millennials are so entitled.
2021: Why does no one want to flip burgers anymore?
There is a viral disease
Where most infections are mild, asymptomatic
With a very low fatality rate
And large age gradient: kids are even lower risk than adults
And less than 1% of kids have any serious complications at all
Yup
Polio
And we vaccinate against it
It's so fucking funny to be antivax. The creation of vaccines is arguably humankind's single greatest achievement. Unquestionably so in terms of the raw quantity of human misery averted. And a bunch of people are just...against that lol
The vaccine has been available to all adults since April 19, 2021. Now watch it again.
Please get your vaccine. It is safe and very effective. The science is sound.
