STATEMENT ON IRAN’S THREAT TO RED SEA SECURITY

We follow with grave concern the renewed Iranian escalation in the region, including missile attacks and drone strikes that targeted Kuwait and Bahrain, and the threat to close the Strait of Hormuz.

For the first time, Iran has publicly named the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the southern entrance of the Red Sea as a potential target the very waterway that the STC has long warned represents the most vulnerable point in the regional maritime security architecture.

Until January, STC forces represented the primary force capable of securing the southwestern coast against the Houthis. However, these forces were dismantled as a result of the Saudi military campaign, creating a security vacuum along the southern coasts at the very moment Iran threatens to exploit it.

In light of this, the STC calls for a comprehensive response to counter the threat posed by Iran and its proxies, one that ensures the protection of maritime security in both the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz simultaneously. It is not viable to secure one end of this strategic corridor while leaving the other unprotected, as this will continue to grant Iran and its Houthi ally dangerous leverage over global security and energy supplies.

The STC remains the most credible force on the southern coast; we are still present on the ground, we possess military capabilities alongside southern popular support.

We also reaffirm our readiness to play our role in protecting this vital waterway, and we are intensifying our engagement with our partners in the region and the West to achieve this goal including discussions to incorporate the South within regional security calculations.
