Tank Beach in Saipan is typically known for its pristine sands, vibrant waters, and peaceful atmosphere. Today, however, it is the complete opposite: 20-foot waves are battering the coastline and are expected to intensify as Super Typhoon Bavi nears the island. I had the chance to speak with Glenn Policare, a local resident since 1993, who noted that preparations for this storm have been incredibly significant. It is clear that no one is letting their guard down after the island was hit by Super Typhoon Sinlaku back in April.

We practiced with caskets that were stored outside our barracks building. To simulate the weight of honored remains, we’d toss several full sandbags into the belly of the casket and then, for hours, we’d go through our exact movements.
