This afternoon at Urugwiro Village, President Kagame received Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff who is in Rwanda on a working visit. They discussed ways forward to deepen existing defence cooperation between Rwanda and Nigeria.
Thank you my dear brother President @CyrilRamaphosa for your warm congratulations and offer of support. We look forward to working with you and all who share this vision as we make this a truly African Grand Prix in every way possible, and take motorsport to new heights on our continent.
Rwanda is building an airport big enough for every person in the country to fly through it once a year.
About 14 million people live there. The new airport is designed for 14 million passengers a year. The one they have now handles around 2 million.
So how do you fill that thing? You go get Formula 1.
The track F1 just announced goes in Bugesera, about 40km south of Kigali, right next to that new $2 billion airport. It's a 10-year deal starting in the early 2030s, and it'll be the first Grand Prix in Africa since 1993.
Now look at who owns the airport. Qatar Airways has 60% of it. Qatar Airways is also F1's official airline.
This is where it gets really smart, because Qatar has done this exact thing before. Doha opened Hamad International in 2014 and spent the next decade giving the world reasons to land there, with a World Cup in 2022 and a Grand Prix locked in through 2032. Hamad now handles over 50 million passengers a year in a country of about 3 million people. Rwanda is basically running Qatar's playbook with Qatar as its business partner.
And Rwanda has been setting this up for years. Visit Rwanda, the country's tourism board, got its logo on Arsenal's sleeve back in 2018 for a reported £10 million a year, and later added PSG, Bayern and Atlético. Kigali hosted the FIA's big awards night in 2024, which is where President Kagame first said out loud he wanted a race. The next year it hosted cycling's world championships, the first time they'd ever been held in Africa. It hosted 165 international conferences last year alone.
Tourism brought in $685 million last year from 1.49 million visitors, and gorilla treks were $248 million of that by themselves. For Rwanda that's real money. But you can't fill a 14 million passenger airport with people coming to see gorillas, so the country keeps buying bigger pieces of the world's attention.
South Africa wanted this race too. It has the history, the old Kyalami circuit, and a sports minister who kept saying F1 was coming back. Talks there stalled over problems with the local promoter. Rwanda walked in with government money behind it and a former F1 driver, Alexander Wurz, already drawing the track.
People are going to have strong feelings about this one. Arsenal and Visit Rwanda wrapped up their sleeve deal after last season, following fan protests and a letter from DR Congo's foreign minister calling the club's sponsorship "blood-stained." Five months later, the same tourism board's name is on the title of a Formula 1 race. Critics have called the whole Visit Rwanda strategy sportswashing for years. Kagame's pitch today was about young Africans finally getting to watch the sport at home and picture themselves in it as engineers, and one day as drivers.
The airport is supposed to open in 2028, with the first race a few years after that. If the plan works, a country smaller than Maryland becomes one of the places people across Africa change planes, and the airline that already pulled that off in the Gulf will own most of the terminal.
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 507 Infantry Brigade has successfully completed a five-month Advanced Infantry Brigade Training (AIBT) at the Combat Training Centre Gabiro in Gatsibo District.
A delegation led by Brig Gen Louis KANOBAYIRE, RDF Chief of Military Training and Education is in New Delhi, India to participate in the second Meeting of the Rwanda - India Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC).
The meeting is aimed at further strengthening the bilateral Defence cooperation in areas of mutual interest, building on the Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation signed in 2018 and the outcomes of the inaugural JDCC held in Kigali in 2024.
On the margins of the meeting, he paid a courtesy call on Hon Rajesh Kumar Singh, Defence Secretary of India.

Madame Celeste Amarilla,
🚨 Wayne Rooney on Declan Rice's set-pieces that inspired England's 4-2 victory:
🗣️ “For the whole of last season, people mocked Arsenal's set-pieces. They called them boring, said they were ruining football and claimed they could never win the biggest trophies playing that way.
Now look at England.
Declan Rice is delivering those same quality dead balls and they've played a huge part in a 4-2 win.
I've watched this World Cup closely and one thing stands out: Arsenal players have consistently produced dangerous set-pieces, with several leading directly to goals.
Maybe the issue was never the set-pieces.
Maybe people were simply frustrated because their own teams didn't have players capable of executing them at that level.
Football fans love effective set-pieces when they're winning games. They only complain when someone else is better at them.”

“Confronting historical responsibilities requires real courage, because it generates fierce opposition by those with a case to answer. You need a strong sense of humanity to see it through. President Macron, I want to commend you on both counts: courage and humanity.
You acknowledged that France could have stopped the genocide, but did not. In response, I described your words as something more valuable than an apology: namely, the truth. This door was first opened by President Nicolas Sarkozy, and I wish to commend him today.
The Genocide against the Tutsi was foreseeable, and in fact foreseen, and France was in a unique position to observe and to act. It took too long for France to come to terms with its role, causing additional pain. And on some points, we still have not found consensus. I fully understand the feelings of those survivors and advocates, who remain dissatisfied with the official record. But I believe that our common work has initiated a journey towards truth, which is irreversible.
And France was not alone in falling short, far from it. Many other countries did so as well, but none has gone as far as France in setting the record straight and accepting its part in the tragedy.” President Kagame | Inauguration of Monument in Paris honouring the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.
Man City won leagues and people shrugged. Arsenal win the league and rival fans turn into full-time analysts, historians and therapists overnight. 😂 Arsenal really slapped the entire football world awake.
🚨 Dennis Bergkamp on the hatred towards Arsenal:
“Even to this day, I still don’t understand why people hate Arsenal so much. Arsenal are not the only team in history to lose a Champions League final.
What surprises me even more is seeing our colleagues in the Premier League supporting outsiders to win the Champions League over us when Arsenal are the team representing the league in the final. I honestly wasn’t expecting that.
Football is about rivalry, but sometimes it feels like an obsession with Arsenal. Every mistake is magnified, while others don’t receive the same level of criticism.
Since we achieved the Invincibles, something none of them have been able to do, they don’t enjoy seeing us win trophies anymore.”
