A German Wehrmacht soldiers returning from intense urban combat in Novorossiysk, Russia, during WWII in 1943. The historical image is documented as being taken during street fighting in the port city of Novorossiysk on the Eastern Front...
German soldiers are pictured in the Black Sea port city after intense street fighting. One man carries a pistol in one hand and an entrenching tool in the other — equipment that could become a formidable close-combat weapon when fighting collapsed into rooms, trenches and ruined buildings. German entrenching tools were primarily intended for digging defensive positions, but they were also used in close-quarter fighting on the Eastern Front.
The combination certainly conveys the nature of the fighting, although the photograph alone cannot prove that he had literally just been involved in hand-to-hand combat.
Novorossiysk was strategically important because of its harbour on the Black Sea. German forces captured most of the city in September 1942 during the drive into the Caucasus, but Soviet troops continued to hold positions nearby.
In February 1943, Soviet forces established the famous Malaya Zemlya — “Little Land” — bridgehead south of the city. For months, German and Soviet troops fought over the surrounding heights, industrial areas and approaches to the port.
The final Soviet assault began on the night of 9–10 September 1943. Troops attacked simultaneously from land and sea, with Soviet marines landing directly in the heavily defended harbour. Fighting inside Novorossiysk became extremely violent, with battles for individual buildings, streets, staircases and defensive positions.
By 16 September, German forces had been driven from the city. Its loss helped undermine the entire Axis position on the Taman Peninsula, which German forces abandoned during the following weeks.
This photograph captures something easily forgotten when looking at maps and arrows showing armies advancing and retreating.
At street level, the Battle of Novorossiysk was fought at terrifyingly close range — sometimes with pistols, grenades, bayonets and even the ordinary soldier's entrenching tool.

Following World War II, approximately 3 million German soldiers were held in Soviet Union camps as forced labor, with many beginning to return home after Stalin’s death in 1953.
While large-scale repatriation occurred in 1955 following Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's visit to Moscow, the final, last surviving German POWs were released and returned home in 1956.
