Warrant Officer II Moses Amonde Oyugi ferried a casket from Moi Air Base Eastleigh to State House without knowing that it bore the body of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
Charles Njonjo had given firm instructions that the president's death should be kept a secret until official announcement.
This was to avoid political intrigues. And, because of Kenyatta's larger than life stature, many had developed an illusion that he was immortal. Therefore there was fear of a pandemonium among members of the public.
At Moi Air Base Eastleigh, Dedan Gichuru the then Kenya Air Force commander who had flown the body from Mombasa, instructed Oyugi to drive straight to State House.
“Drive straight to State House. Don’t stop and don’t speak to anyone,” Oyugi recalled Gichuru ordering him.
Although Mama Ngina and Moi also got into the ambulance, Oyugi was still not sure about the contents of the casket.
The convoy made up of two vehicles made its way to State House without attracting any attention.
Oyugi only realised he had been ferrying the president's body when they were asked to open the casket and place the body on a bed for embalming.
