Six students were seriously injured after a portion of the ceiling collapsed during class at a government school in Mugalolli, Karnataka’s Bagalkote.

This post by Sandipan Deb should be read by all who keep jabbering about Calcutta/Kolkata as “City of Joy”.

It’s like the much-used phrase ‘Oh! Calcutta!’ (now also a chain of Bangla food restaurants).

‘Oh! Calcutta!’, the title of a popular 1969 Broadway risqué revue featuring nude actors, is a pun on the French phrase ‘O quel cul t'as!’, which means “Oh, what an a**e you have!”

Fashionable Anglophile Bengalis who speak with a chee-chee accent are not known for knowing their frontside from their backside or their Left from their Right. But then, it is they who make ‘City of Joy’ so unique.

I get irritated whenever I hear proud Kolkatans referring to their city as the "City of Joy", after the title of Dominique Lapierre's book. This happens all the time.

I doubt whether Lapierre was referring to Kolkata when he named his book. The name is a straight translation of Anand Nagar, a hellhole of a slum where the story is set.

Lapierre came to Kolkata (then Calcutta) in the early 1980s, impressed by the worldwide (free) publicity campaign by Mother Teresa and her little cult that Calcutta was the most f**ked-up city on the planet. Then he looked for really f**ked-up slums there and settled on Anand Nagar.

There was enormous media coverage, extraordinary levels of genuflecting gratitude, and Lapierre was made an honorary Calcuttan because he told the world what a f**ked-up life we led in this city.

The Anand Nagar slum wasn't even in Calcutta. It was in Pilkhana in Howrah. But Bengalis took Lapierre's title and applied it to Calcutta and rejoiced.

Bengalis had felt proud when Mother Teresa told the world how dreadful Calcutta was (Yay! We are the most dreadful city in the world according to Time magazine!) and ran her multimillion-dollar Vatican racket. This book was further international validation. We are the top-seeded Indians in the race to the bottom! That white-skinned author (French! Truffaut! Sartre!) chose us, not Marathis or Tamizhians!

And even today, we continue to greet visitors at the airport with "Welcome to the City of Joy" signs.

Today Bengal can see multiple competing power centres ..Mamata TMC, Abhishek TMC, Kalighat TMC, Ritabrata TMC, NCPI and several other camps. Settle your internal battles before pointing fingers at the BJP.

And please spare Bengal the sudden lecture on political violence and intimidation.

If the BJP believed in revenge politics, after 4 May 2026 the name of TMC could have been politically erased from Bengal. We chose governance and the rule of law, not vendetta.

For years, BJP workers have alleged brutal political persecution under TMC rule. More than 321 BJP workers lost their lives in political violence. Party offices were attacked and destroyed, workers were assaulted and driven from their homes, and there were grave allegations of sexual violence and molestation against women workers. Countless workers faced what we have consistently described as politically motivated and false cases.

Despite all that, after coming to power we did not declare war on TMC workers. Because a change of government should mean a change in governance, not merely a change in who gets to misuse power.

So, Abhishek, don’t play the victim and don’t act like a cry baby every time something happens.

If your office has been vandalised, let the police investigate. Let evidence identify the culprits, and let the law take its course.

But stop blaming the BJP without evidence simply because it is politically convenient.

Solve the civil war inside your own party first.
Don’t blame BJP for your internal mess.

Bengal has seen enough political violence. Our answer will be law, accountability and governance—not revenge.

A refresher for the financial-numbers illiterates who have a problem comprehending basic economic indicators: How to read GDP numbers.

If you want to understand GDP growth, there are three basic rules: know whether the number is nominal or real, use the same GDP series, and compare like with like.

Here is how it works.

1. Nominal GDP ≠ Real GDP

₹80 lakh crore to ₹88.27 lakh crore is 10.3% nominal growth, not 7.8%.

Why? Because nominal GDP reflects both changes in output and changes in prices.

To calculate real GDP growth, you use GDP at constant prices. Here, ₹75.46 lakh crore rose to ₹81.36 lakh crore at constant 2022-23 prices, giving 7.8% real growth. MoSPI states this explicitly.

2. Never mix different GDP series

₹86.05 lakh crore was the old 2011-12-series nominal estimate.

₹88.27 lakh crore is the new 2022-23-series nominal estimate.

You cannot divide a number from the new series by a number from the old series, convert it in percentage and call the result a growth rate. That creates a statistical Frankenstein.

So:

((₹88.27 / ₹86.05) - 1 ) * 100= 2.6%

The problem is not the arithmetic. The problem is that ₹88.27 lakh crore and ₹86.05 lakh crore belong to different GDP series. 

So, treating 2.6% as a legitimate GDP growth rate is neither a valid same-series comparison nor real GDP growth.

3. Revisions are not “rewriting” history

₹86.05 lakh crore was not “quietly rewritten” after seeing this year’s figures.

The new GDP series was published on 27 February 2026, before Q1 FY27 had even begun, and had already re-estimated Q1 FY26 nominal GDP at about ₹80.32 lakh crore.

The August update moved that figure marginally to ₹80.00 lakh crore after incorporating new PPI, IIP and administrative data.

More importantly, the comparable real Q1 FY26 denominator was revised upward, from roughly ₹75.29 lakh crore to ₹75.46 lakh crore.

That is the exact opposite of suppressing the base to inflate growth.

4. Why does the GDP series get revised?

Because better data becomes available.

MoSPI’s new methodology incorporates new coverage, GST and administrative data, annual surveys, activity-wise corporate estimates, Denton benchmarking, double deflation and Supply-Use Table integration.

Even the original ₹86.05 lakh crore release explicitly warned that estimates would be revised as better data became available.

So, what are the valid calculations?

((₹88.27 - ₹80.00)/₹80.00))*100 = 10.3% nominal growth

((₹81.36 - ₹75.46)/₹75.46))*100 = 7.8% real growth

₹88.27 new series ÷ ₹86.05 old series = meaningless hybrid

The lesson is simple: before drawing conclusions from economic data, check three things - nominal or real, which series, and whether you are comparing like with like.

Ever since he was removed from the Finance Ministry amid questions over his performance, Subhash Chandra Garg has turned into a full-time doomsayer on the Indian economy.

His latest half-baked “2.6% growth” analysis is yet another reminder of why his economic assessments deserve to be taken with a large pinch of salt.

First, a basic lesson in reading GDP data: 7.8% is real growth. Inflation has already been removed. Official nominal GDP grew 10.3%, from ₹80.00 lakh crore to ₹88.27 lakh crore, while real GDP grew 7.8%. Subtracting 5–6% CPI inflation from an already inflation-adjusted figure is double-deflation, an elementary error that should embarrass a first-year economics student, let alone a former finance secretary. Second, the “base was quietly downgraded” allegation is fraudulent comparison. The earlier 7.8% belonged to the old GDP series; 6.9% belongs to the rebased 2022–23 series. In fact, the latest new-series revision increased Q1 FY26 growth from 6.8% to 6.9%. Revisions occur both upward and downward as fresh data arrive. That is standard benchmark-indicator methodology followed internationally, not a conspiracy invented in Garg’s imagination.

Third, he has even read the “discrepancy” backwards. The constant-price discrepancy changed from positive ₹1.37 lakh crore last year to negative ₹1.06 lakh crore this year. It reduced the latest GDP figure. Excluding discrepancies, expenditure components grew approximately 11.2%, not 2.6%. His supposedly devastating argument collapses upon reading the actual table.

And where exactly is Garg’s imaginary 2.6% collapse visible?

* Listed-company profits rose 16%, while revenue grew 18.4%, the fastest in 15 quarters.
* Passenger-vehicle dispatches rose 34.3%; actual retail sales rose 19.1% to their best-ever July level.
* Tractor retail sales jumped 28.1%, another July record.
* Gross FDI reached a 15-year high of $30.7 billion.
* Non-food credit grew 18.3% in June, the strongest Q1 reading since 2012, and accelerated to 19.1% in July.
* Coal India’s supplies rose 18.38% to its highest-ever July offtake.
* Merchandise exports jumped 19.6% to a record $44.24 billion.
* July IIP grew 6.7%, manufacturing 7.3% and capital goods 16.1%.
* Forex reserves reached an all-time high of $729.33 billion.

No single indicator calculates GDP. But this broad expansion across production, investment, credit, consumption, exports and corporate performance completely demolishes Garg’s fantasy of an economy growing at only 2.6%.

India has genuine challenges. Those should be debated honestly. But unemployment slogans and political bitterness cannot replace national-accounting methodology.

Garg has exposed his own inability to read comparable data and demonstrated the same half-baked incompetence that got him out of the Finance Ministry.

The only fictional number here is Garg’s 2.6%.

GDP numbers for those who need a refresher course in economics.

SBI Research has dismantled the needless controversy over India’s Q1 FY27 GDP numbers.

The facts are straightforward:

• Real GDP growth: 7.8% at constant prices.
• Nominal GDP growth: 10.3% at current prices.
• Q1 FY26 nominal GDP, after the new base-year revision, is ₹80.0 lakh crore, while Q1 FY27 is ₹88.3 lakh crore.
• Comparing ₹88.3 lakh crore with the old ₹86.1 lakh crore figure and calling the difference “growth” is simply wrong.
• GDP estimates are routinely revised, both upward and downward. Q1 FY27 itself will go through multiple revisions and be finalised only in February 2029.

As SBI Research puts it, deducing conclusions by mixing two entirely different GDP series is “fallacious” and a sign of intellectual sclerosis.

Maybe before lecturing the country on economics, some of our self-proclaimed experts should learn how GDP numbers actually work.
