During the early 1640s, the Dutch built the first border wall in North America, a 12 foot (4 meter) structure to help protect against pirates, Native Americans and other potential enemies. In 1664, the British completely ignored the wall and took New Amsterdam by sea. The British renamed the Dutch settlement New York and tore down the wall and built a street. The street is now called Wall Street
