💔 9 TURKISH RESCUE DOGS & TWO BRITISH RESCUE VOLUNTEERS TRAGICALLY LOST IN A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT TODAY 💔

Today the rescue world has been shaken by an unimaginable tragedy.

Our rescue friend Claire Dalton of Homeward Bound Rescue in Turkey has fought for years to protect and save dogs who had nobody else. These nine precious dogs had finally left Turkey and were en route to Claires home in France, heading towards the brighter future Claire had fought so hard to give them.

They were being transported by two British women volunteers helping to get them to safety when their vehicle was involved in a devastating accident on the motorway in Romania. Tragically, both women and nine dogs of the ten dogs lost their lives. The one dog who survived will be collected and cared for by a Romanian rescuer today.

For Claire and her team this is simply unimaginable. To fight so hard for these dogs, keep them safe and finally see them begin their journey to a better life, only for it to end like this, is heartbreaking.

Our thoughts are also very much with the families and loved ones of the two ladies who lost their lives while helping these dogs on their journey.

Pictures of the accident are widely available on the internet, but out of respect for everyone involved, we have chosen not to share them.

Rest peacefully, beautiful dogs, and the two ladies who were taking you towards your new lives. 💔🐾

So I am going to say this and move on (for now) because thinking about the gross ineptitude of the system in place for “aftercare” does little more than infuriate me and I don’t like to spend my life angry.

OK so…

The current system for “aftercare” is set up so that the industry ultimately won’t be financially responsible for the long-term care of its athletes once they can’t make money anymore.

Full stop.

This is why the industry’s organization tasked with “aftercare” pushes second careers, adoptions, “education” (whatever that means), training, marketing, working with racetracks and monitoring accredited organizations budgets like a vice so that, ultimately, the industry can pawn off the responsibility of lifetime care on other people. Usually horse lovers, non-racing folks and people who just want to help.

It is my position that the industry *AS A WHOLE* is responsible for every being it brings into this world to benefit it, from when a foal stands and nurses to when he or she takes their last breath, but especially well after he or she can churn a profit or have the potential to churn a profit.

The industry *AS A WHOLE* benefits from every being it brings into this world, whether it be on the racetrack or in the breeding shed. There is no other reason to bring a Thoroughbred into this world.

This is why they don’t care about the kill pen/slaughter pipeline horses. This is why they justify them as collateral damage because the horse traders use “ransom” and “emotional blackmail” tactics to sell the horses. Or that they “don’t ship” to justify turning a blind eye.

Newsflash:

What the horse traders do is awful, I loathe the traders. But what they do is no different than a bloodstock agent or sales company selling the dream of winning the Kentucky Derby. Or an Eclipse Award. Or a Breeders’ Cup race. That, sorry to say, is emotional blackmail, just a lot fancier with a lot more bourbon consumed.

Second newsflash:

They ship. Even with closed borders now due to the screwworm they ship, the traders have worked ways around the embargo. And if the don’t ship in a grody, cramped trailer in 100 degrees not to a slaughterhouse in Mexico then they are shipped to the next auction on down the road, losing weight and getting sick or injured until the trader gets his price. And if that doesn’t happen, they just disappear. It is unconscionable a single horse in a billion-dollar industry is subjected to this type of cruelty, yet here we are.

This is why I won’t shut up about the gross incompetence and croneyism in aftercare.

I will not stop speaking up for the ones who can’t speak for themselves, like every one of the amazing beings who made it to safety through our gates.

Is this the outrage machine? Racing hates the “outrage machine” I guess. Maybe it is, I don’t know. I just find it absurd that those who could and should make a difference in the lives of these innocent beings aren’t outraged too.

That is the reality for so many voiceless souls who survive on the mercy of strangers. They search for scraps, wander for hours, and sometimes go to sleep with empty stomachs yet the next morning, they still look at us with hope.

Look at this community dog… those eyes aren’t asking for anything fancy. They are silently begging for one meal, one act of kindness, one person who cares. 💔

Their hunger is real. Their pain is real.
And sadly, their only way to survive is to depend on our compassion.

Please, let’s be that someone.

A woman says she repeatedly begged her neighbors to stop leaving their 2-year-old Goldendoodle, Rocco, chained outside in the Texas heat for 10 to 15 hours a day without water or shade.

She says she called animal control and even offered to take him in, but her help was refused. The dog later died, and she has now started a petition calling for his owners to be held accountable. "It is imperative that local authorities pursue this case to ensure justice for Rocco," the petition reads.
