The end of Communism in Europe was wonderful in many ways, bringing freedom and prosperity.
But in terms of birthrates, the transition was disastrous. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, fertility collapsed in every single Eastern European country and has never recovered. Why? 🧵
Many immigrant women out earn their husbands throwing the the domestic sphere into disarray.
Some men embraced it, while others could not. Some Kerala Christian nurses handed all financial matters to their husband and even pretended to not know their own salaries.
@tyqwer16 Taiwan is the worse performer than South Korea, considering it also has a large 1990 born cohort but no rebound since 2023. In fact Taiwan cohort extend to early 2000s.
This is unlike mainland China which saw newborns halve from 1990 to 1997 due to stricter one child policy.

Not a good sign for India, which started aging almost 20 years too early for this. East Africa might benefit more from this.
@DrSaripanidis@mi233695 If TFR is inflated, then why let the national TFR to just ~1.05? Why not inflate just inflate it to 1.5 or 2.0 if it is that easy?
Do you fake your results all the time as MD is that why are you so experienced on this subject?
@BasqueOli Chinese Malaysians had fertility 7.5 in the 1950s, higher than Muslim Malay.
The 1970s is the beginning of Chinese demographic downhill, but no one realized the problem until 2010s.
@BasqueOli Heilongjiang border town activity nowadays is basically Russians women and kids crossing the border to shop. On the other hand, not many Chinese cross into Primorsky, before the sanctions it was mostly Koreans that go there.
