Yesterday, I had the distinct honour of serving as a panelist at the Decarbonizing Infrastructure in Nigeria Summit, 2025, held at the Statehouse Banquet Hall, Abuja. Themed "Unlocking Climate Finance for Sustainable Development," this high-level summit brought together visionary leaders, experts, and innovators from across Africa and beyond.
During the Investment and Public-Private Partnerships Roundtable, I engaged alongside esteemed colleagues to explore practical pathways to accelerate investment-ready, climate-aligned infrastructure in Nigeria. We delved into critical discussions on risk-sharing frameworks, blended finance, and how targeted Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) can drive the much-needed transformation in sectors like energy, transport, urban development, and climate-smart agriculture.
As highlighted in the pre-summit workshops, Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment: we must decarbonize even as we urbanize and industrialize. This demands not just ambition, but well-coordinated action across all levels of government, strong institutional reforms, innovative financing mechanisms, and deep engagement with our private sector and communities.
In Kano State, under the leadership of His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, we are steadfast in translating these national aspirations into tangible local actions through our green urban initiatives, waste-to-wealth and waste-to-energy programs, climate-resilient agriculture, and by advancing policy frameworks that position our state as an attractive hub for climate investment.
I commend the Office of the Vice President, the National Council on Climate Change, and all partners for convening this timely summit. Together, we can unlock unprecedented opportunities for sustainable growth, job creation, and improved quality of life for our peopleโbuilding a greener, more resilient Kano and Nigeria for generations to come.

I had the pleasure of receiving the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), Mr. Saleh Abubakar, MFR, in my office. We discussed critical areas of collaboration between the agency and the Kano State Government, especially in the context of our shared commitment to land restoration and climate resilience.
I shared updates on our projects including the flagship 5 million tree planting program, and the ongoing avenue plantation initiative that is greening our urban spaces.
I also noted the recent approval by His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf for an increase in forest guardsโ salaries and the recruitment of new personnel, reaffirming our dedication to environmental protection.
Mr. Abubakar expressed strong interest in partnering with Kano State on a plantation project and a plan to plant 5 million date palm trees as part of broader land conservation efforts.
We remain committed to supporting strategic partnerships that will enhance our climate change adaptation efforts and ensure a greener, more resilient Kano State.

Honourable Commissioner,
Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Kano State.
On behalf of the entire Management and Staff of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, we joyfully celebrate our esteemed leader, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, on the occasion of his birthday.
Happy Birthday, Sir!
I'm honored to have received the ISTF Green Award at the 2025 International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) Nigeria Conference in Kano, an acknowledgment of our collective efforts in environmental sustainability and governance in Kano State.
During the conference, I announced some key developments in our environmental agenda. His Excellency has approved an increase in forest guards' salaries and the recruitment of new personnel, an important step in strengthening forest protection. The recruitment portal will open shortly. Our 2025 state-wide tree planting campaign is set to launch, alongside strengthened policies on pollution control, climate action, and shelterbelt restoration.
I urge all citizens to support these efforts, say no to indiscriminate tree felling, plant trees, and engage in community sensitization. Environmental protection is not the governmentโs job alone; it is a shared responsibility. Together, we can secure a greener and more sustainable Kano State.
Dr. Dahir M Hashim
