The Director of the Governance and Conflict Prevention Directorate, Ms. @PatienceChirad3, met with a team of researchers from the University of East London, led by Dr Tonny Raymond Kirabira, to strengthen collaboration on governance and human rights research. She welcomed the delegation, received a copy of Dr Kirabira’s latest book, Transnational Networks and Justice in the Global South (Springer, 2025), and highlighted the Directorate’s priority areas.

The researchers will continue engaging with @AUC_PAPS thematic experts on the implementation of AU policy and normative frameworks. The visit concluded with a meeting with Mr Kaston Adeniyi Ojomo, Special Assistant to the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda (Kwibuka32).

On the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda (#Kwibuka32), the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Commission in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Ethiopia and Permanent Mission to the AU, will commemorate the1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, under the theme: “Remember-Unite- Renew”, on 7 April 2026, at the African Union Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The annual commemoration aims to continuously awaken greater awareness of the African people and the international community about the value of life and humanity and to renew collective commitment to protect and uphold fundamental human rights. Mostly, the event will provide an opportunity to remember the atrocities brought by the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda; unite together in our fight against genocide, its ideology, hate speech and other crimes against humanity; and to renew our resolve to ensure that Genocide does not happen ever again.

Representatives from the AU Member States, the AU Commission, Members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the AU, AU Organs, Religious Institutions, Human Rights Institutions, Intergovernmental and Civil Society Organizations, UN Agencies, Think Tanks, International Organizations, Academic Institutions in Ethiopia, as well as, representatives of the media will attend the event, which will be marked by a series of activities, such as, the 32nd Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, which will also include Walk to Remember, lighting of the Flame of Remembrance, launch of the AU Human Rights Virtual Memorial: introduction of the component of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tusti in Rwanda and messages of reflection from AU officials and invited guests, among others.

The AU has been commemorating this catastrophic event since 07 April 2010. This year marks the 32nd commemoration of those dark days, an important occasion to remember the lives lost, show solidarity with survivors and unite to ensure it never happens again – in Rwanda or elsewhere in Africa and beyond. It is also a chance to learn about Rwanda’s story of reconciliation, conflict resolution mechanisms, nation building and home grown solutions.

✅ Key discussions focused on the role of the private sector & CSOs in implementing the framework.

✅ Recommendations will be consolidated into a report to inform the final draft for submission to the AU's STC on Justice & Legal Affairs in 2026.

With violent conflict across the globe at its highest levels since the Second World War, and many donors cutting development financing, what can we do? On the one hand, we need to start thinking out of the box to stop these repeating patterns. And we need to be better at what the root causes of conflict are. This way we can design more effective and efficient conflict prevention measures. We urgently need to find better ways of incentivising how we work together across sectors since successful conflict prevention is predicated on effective cooperation. This is easier said than done! For instance, we know that Early Warning Systems are meant to serve as the first lines of defence. Yet most partner Early Warning Systems are designed to focus on symptoms rather than root causes.

This panel spotlights emerging best practice generated by a longstanding multilateral program spanning three institutions – the World Bank, the African Union and the UN - to incentivise and inspire innovative conflict prevention partnerships that focus on identifying and tackling root causes.

Tune in to learn about the experiences of this group of partners engaged in collectively bridging the gap between early warning and early action by using a human rights-based approach to conflict prevention.

Get first hand insights into (a) how investment into partnerships can help interrupt and break repeating conflict patterns, and (b) how innovative inclusive data ecosystems underpinned by symbiotic intelligence (SI) that blends AI, machine learning and human intelligence can help build trust and incentivise more effective conflict prevention actions.

The successfully concluded AU–EU Human Rights Dialogue, co-chaired by H.E. Ambassador @Bankole_Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and H.E. @KajsaOllongren, EU Special Representative for Human Rights, provided an important platform where we, as civil society representatives, were able to make our mark in highlighting pressing human rights concerns.

In realizing this capacity building, the @AUC_PAPS joined forces with @UNHumanRights, @ecowas_cedeao, @GIZAfricanUnion and @UNITAR.

🎯 The primary objective is to strengthen regional early warning by making human rights a foundational principle, moving from reactive response to proactive conflict prevention. Why link Human Rights & Early Warning? Systemic rights violations are key drivers of conflict. This training in Lomé equips stakeholders to address root causes, not just symptoms.

From 23-25 September 2025 in Accra, the @AUC_PAPS-GCPD convened the final consultation on the operationalisation of the Pan-African Human Rights Institute (#PAHRI).
Mr. Issaka Garba Abdou on behalf of H.E. Amb. @Bankole_Adeoye, stressed: “This is not only a technical exercise but a matter of governance.” He reaffirmed that:
the Institute must be cost-effective, embedded within existing AU structures, aligned with #Agenda2063 & the Human Rights Decade to advance human rights education.

The outcome of this consultation will guide AU policy organs on how to move from feasibility to implementation.
