Sheng Thao sold Oakland to the highest bidder and now the bill is coming due in exactly 90 days.

The federal corruption trial begins October 19.

The bribes were not rumors. Andre Jones allegedly collected $95,000 in no-show money from the Duong crime family while Sheng Thao steered city contracts their way. Oakland paid the price in the form of stripped police resources, exploding violent crime, and lost grants while her administration played political games and used “Black leaders as tokens.”

This was never governance. It was a straight pay-to-play operation that treated the city like a personal ATM for connected insiders.

Now the insiders are facing real consequences.

Andre Jones is staring down serious federal time with every reason to cooperate and tell the full story. The Duongs are in the same position. The evidence trail is already documented and will be laid out in open court.

Sheng Thao spent years acting like the rules did not apply to her. The next 90 days are the last ones she gets before a federal jury decides how much that arrogance is going to cost.

When Barbara Lee pledged within her first 100 days to launch a comprehensive forensic audit to identify waste, fraud, and abuse, many Oaklanders envisioned a sweeping review of how City Hall spends taxpayer dollars.

The supplemental report for Tuesday, July 21, 2026 City Council , Consent Item S6.30 ( ~ S6.54),shows that the City selected a highly qualified forensic auditing firm with a proven record of uncovering procurement failures, political influence, weak internal controls, and questionable spending in other jurisdictions.

And rather than examining City expenditures broadly, the audit is limited to capital projects and Human Services contracts from a specific three-year period.

Was this done by the City Council Members or City Administrator protecting any wrongdoings???

For residents who hoped for a citywide accounting of spending and accountability, the disappointment isn't in the auditor it's in the audit they were asked to perform. The promise of a comprehensive forensic audit remains only partially fulfilled, leaving many to wonder whether the broader examination they expected will ever come.
