In the last four World Cup finals, only two runners-up stayed on the pitch until the trophy presentation: Argentina in 2014 and Argentina in 2026.
Not Croatia, Not France. Did anyone say anything during that time? No, because that wouldn't get clicks.
Guess which country is now being criticized and accused of disrespecting the winners simply for going over to acknowledge their own fans? Argentina, of course.
I’ve seen so many silly opinions regarding this and it’s funny how logic seems to disappear whenever Messi is involved.
First, The rules clearly say that covering your mouth while talking to an opponent is a red card offense. Everyone is aware of this rule (which was introduced after Prestianni’s incident with Vini) but since it’s Messi, let’s all suddenly forget it exists.
Second, a player on his team had just been sent off which makes the game uneven. As a captain it’s expected that he’d try to even things at any chance. Cucurella covering his mouth while talking to him presented that chance and he tried to take it but fortunately for one or unfortunately for the other, it’s one of those times where the rules lack consistency.
The amount of narratives I’ve seen about this moment in the game is beyond disgusting. Even casuals who know nothing are having opinions. He’s been called names just for doing the right thing any captain would do for his team
Always grateful he won the World Cup in 2022 because the things that would have been said about him would’ve been way more pathetic than the ones currently being said.
Bellingham slapping Argentina’s player didn’t go under investigation and Bellingham didn’t get a card for it.
But remember Argentina are FIFA’s favorite 😂.
This 41yo manchild has spent the last 20 years trash-talking Messi, fueling hate campaigns against him, and crying under random Instagram posts, yet he's still idolized by millions across the globe. What a messed-up world we live in. Beyond repair.
This World Cup was one of Messi’s biggest carry jobs ever, particularly from an attacking standpoint.
In 2022, at least Julian rose to the occasion and scored multiple key goals. 4 years on, it was a 39-year-old Messi or absolutely nothing.
And he yet again proved he’s still the best footballer in the world.
The hate Argentina got this tournament made me realize how easy it is to brainwash and program people. Would love to see someone publish work on this some day as it’s a very interesting case study.
After 2022, none of us imagined we’d even be here. We all thought Messi wouldn’t play in 2026. At 39, he reached a level no athlete has ever reached at that age. He owed us nothing, yet gave us everything.
You’ll always be the greatest, Leo.
Argentina never got the respect they deserved.
I’ve never seen a national team receive this much hate for simply winning. Instead of giving credit to a team that has dominated world football for the last five years, social media became full of edited clips, AI-generated images, fake quotes, misleading posts and out-of-context videos, all made to discredit what this team achieved.
The worst part is that many people didn’t even care if it was true. If it got engagement, they shared it. If it pushed another anti-Argentina narrative, they believed it. That’s how low football discussion became. Imagine how empty your life has to be that your only way of getting attention is by spreading lies and fake propaganda about other people.
Every foul was analyzed frame by frame. Every referee decision became a conspiracy. Every victory had to come with an excuse. I’ve never seen another team get microanalyzed like this just because they kept winning.
A lot of this comes down to one thing: Lionel Messi, who is far better player than their favorite player, far better, far talented and achieved far more in the sport so as they see that Messi is better than their favorite player, instead of accepting it they looked for ways to discredit him and the team around him.
During this World Cup, people threw every label they could at Argentina. Racists. Zionists. Cheaters. Corrupt. All based on viral posts, fake quotes, edited clips or AI-generated content, without caring whether any of it was actually true.
They spent years trying to convince people that Argentina and these players didn’t deserve what they achieved.
The truth is that, they couldn’t accept that Lionel Messi and this generation reached a level their favorites never did.
No amount of propaganda can rewrite football history. And history will remember this Argentina team as one of the best international sides ever.
