In 13 years of reporting waste fires, particularly horticulture biomass fires, we have come to understand that this rampant, round-the-year practice is driven by two things: the lack of infrastructure to process biomass waste and the unrestrained, fearless operation of tractor-trolleys, for whom waste has become a revenue model. Here is one example: this vacant plot, surrounded by Sector 46 homes and DPS Sector 47, has seen waste dumping and burning for at least 11 years. https://t.co/8GTxZQDnmx

In these 11 years, Gurugram has seen several Municipal Commissioners come and go, many doing their best to rein it in. But challans alone have not stopped this practice. There is enough history to establish that. The system remains the same -collect, dump and, when there is nowhere to take it, burn it.

A) We would specifically like to know from @ULBHaryana: what is the status of the briquette-making and other processing of horticulture waste that was first announced in 2016/17? The city is in dire need of Integrated Horticulture Waste Management for all components of this biomass.

B) #ImmediateIntervention #ToStopWasteFires : Dear CM, please take political ownership of this. We would like Gurgaon MP Sh @Rao_InderjitS ji, MLA Sh @RaoNarbir ji and Sh. @MukeshSharmaGG ji to bring the municipal ward councillors and tractor-trolley waste collectors and transporters and village landlords together and end this collect-dump-burn cycle permanently.
Waste lying on the roadside is a problem; burning it makes it inhalable pollution for children and residents with no escape. Administration can extinguish fires and issue challans, but it cannot keep solving the same problem year after year without the #politicalpush to build the processing infrastructure. Please make horticulture-waste management happen -so the next fire is prevented, not just extinguished. 🙏
