Depression is NOT a choice
so NO ONE in the history of
healing from depression has healed from being told
“Just choose happiness”
In fact, that kind of verbiage is shaming, and can fuel thoughts of worthlessness, guilt, failure-ship, and punishment.
Often, the way we treat ourselves and allow others to treat us is a reflection of how we feel about ourselves, how we might have grown up feeling, how we egregiously might have seen ourselves based on the shame we internalized from our primary attachment figures.
In case you don't know, Dee Snider was the lead singer of Twisted Sister. In 1984, "We're Not Gonna Take It" was their biggest hit. Now, it represents Ukrainian freedom.
