Are you familiar with black cannabis? Exploring various cannabis forums reveals conflicting opinions on the existence of black cannabis. Can certain strains attain such a dark hue that they appear black? Although uncommon, there are indeed strains of cannabis that exhibit deep black/purple/blue coloring.
However, this distinctive coloration only manifests under specific conditions. Let’s delve into the factors that contribute to the development of black cannabis strains.
What Causes Some Plants to Have a Darker Hue?
The prevailing climate heavily influences the alteration of color in plants. Cannabis cultivated in the warm Mediterranean typically displays a vibrant green color, while plants grown in cooler climates tend to produce compounds resulting in a purple hue.
The critical agents behind this phenomenon are anthocyanins, which serve as natural antifreeze for the plant. This antifreeze property aids in water retention, preventing water from escaping the leaves and forming ice crystals between leaf cells in freezing conditions. The cooler the growing climate, the greater the production of anthocyanins.
Some researchers propose that anthocyanins act as sunscreen, shielding plant leaves from specific light intensities and enhancing the absorption of other soft types. Anthocyanins stimulate the absorption of blue and green light wavelengths, with cannabis responding by producing more anthocyanins under certain stress conditions.
Furthermore, it is plausible that the coloration serves as an attractant for specific pollinators while deterring potential pests. Much like various flowers exhibiting a spectrum of colors, cannabis flowers can produce an array of hues.
During periods of drought, plants also tend to increase anthocyanin production. These theories collectively suggest that anthocyanin production is an adaptive trait enabling plants to thrive and endure specific environmental conditions.
If anthocyanins elucidate the purple coloration in cannabis, how does black come into play? Well, anthocyanin in cannabis is the same compound found in plants such as black rice, eggplant, black currants, and black/blue tomatoes. Consequently, the greater the presence of anthocyanins in a plant, the more profound its coloration becomes.
Color Genetics
The interplay between environmental conditions and genetics governs the coloration of plants. Cool climates stimulate increased anthocyanin production in plants, yet certain purple strains exhibit superior capabilities in generating this compound. For instance, strains like Black can produce leaves and buds with a deep purple, almost black hue in nearly any environment.
The hypothesis suggests that the Black strain possesses a recessive phenotype enabling enhanced conversion of glucose into anthocyanins. Offspring from the Black strain hybrids can display a diverse range of colors, ranging from purple to reddish and even white. To maintain a black coloration, the progeny must inherit a recessive gene from both parent plants.
pH Influence
Anthocyanins, responsible for red, purple, blue, and black hues, are influenced by pH levels. Cannabis plants naturally thrive in slightly acidic soil. However, the redder coloration intensifies with more acidic soil, while neutral pH promotes blue and purple hues.
To enhance the purple tones in your herb, maintaining a slightly higher pH within the optimal range of 5.8 to 6.8 on the pH scale is recommended.
Color and Potency
While some individuals perceive black strains as highly psychedelic and rich in THC, the color of the plant may not directly contribute to potency. Instead, certain strains with black phenotypes may have been selectively bred to produce elevated levels of THC. Indica plants, known for their propensity to turn purple more readily, are also believed to produce higher THC amounts naturally.
Effects on Consumption Experience
While color may or may not directly impact the overall consumption experience, anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for vibrant colors, offer many health benefits. Much like the advice to “eat the rainbow,” anthocyanins contribute to the reds, purples, and blues in the food color spectrum.
In humans, anthocyanins provide various health advantages, including protection against cardiovascular disease, antioxidant properties, cancer prevention, memory enhancement, anti-aging effects, immune regulation, and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Congratulations, you’ve found a buyer! But before you celebrate, there’s an important part of the closing process you need to pass: the final walkthrough. The final walkthrough isn’t a full-fledged home inspection, but if the buyer finds issues during the process it could complicate things. Your seller duties are still in play here, so be sure to communicate with your agent regarding best practices during these final stages. Let’s take a look at the final walkthrough and how to make sure you pass it with flying colors.
8 Tips for First-Time Home Sellers
What happens during the final walkthrough?
As the name suggests, the walkthrough takes place during the closing process. This is not the time for discussing negotiating terms or buyer contingencies, since those details have already been ironed out at this point. The final walkthrough is a chance for the buyer to make sure they’re getting the house they’re paying for. They’ll examine the property with their real estate agent to verify that the terms of the deal are legit. For example, they’ll make sure that you’ve made the negotiated repairs, that you’re handing the property off to them in its agreed-upon condition, and that no new issues have popped up since it was formally inspected. If the buyer finds issues during their walkthrough, it could delay the closing process and/or hurt your net proceeds from the sale. Worst case scenario, complications discovered during the walkthrough could lead to a buyer backing out of the deal.

Final Walkthrough Checklist
The final walkthrough will take place near closing day. You’ll have time to empty the house and make sure everything about its condition aligns with what’s spelled out in the purchase agreement. No matter how careful you try to be during the moving process, sometimes a wall or trim can get scuffed or scratched when trying to get the couch the last few feet out the door. Accidents happen. Just be sure to repair any damage before you’re fully moved out.
Keep a record of the work you’ve done to make sure your house is being sold as described in the real estate contract. Hold on to all paperwork that shows evidence of the repairs you and the buyer agreed on to verify they have been completed. You and your listing agent will iron out the details regarding which items you intend to take with you, but in general, appliances and other items that are fixed in place stay with the home. If there is something specific that you want to take with you to your new home, that will be a point of negotiation.
Make sure everything is clean and working properly before the buyer conducts their walkthrough. Check your appliances, HVAC, and other home systems including the thermostat, the home security system, and any smart home tech products. OPINION: It’s been a busy week at CES, with more announcements than I was expecting leading up to the tech showcase. A few weeks ago, I was thinking perhaps CES might be on the wane, but while CES 2024 isn’t quite back to peak levels of attendees, it is getting back to having the same wow factor.
The one trend that most have picked up on is the use of artificial intelligence. Where this column is most concerned is with the use of AI in TVs to drive performance. It’s become more prevalent, and I’m not sure that’s always a good thing.
There are ways in which I think AI is necessary. Consider Samsung’s approach with its upcoming 8K TVs. The company has doubled down on using artificial intelligence with its NQ8 AI Gen 3 processor, applying it to motion processing and upscaling of content.
This includes being able to use AI to figure out the geometry of peoples’faces on screen, or any object in the frame, and clear it up, sharpen it, and reduce noise to get lower quality resolutions closer to 8K. In this sense, it’s a tool to extract better picture quality.
LG would say the same thing about its latest AI mode but so far, I’m less convinced by it, especially when it appears less sacrosanct in respecting the creative intent.
Take LG’s latest α (Alpha) 11 AI processor. It’s able to work above the DRM on Netflix, Disney+, or any other streaming service you care to think of. I haven’t seen it in action, and this is only possible with the AI Picture Pro mode switched on (so you have a say in this matter) but it leaves me a little confused about what the intent is.
For example, the AI Director Processing on LG’s TVs with the α (Alpha) 11 AI processor can “analyse the director’s intentional colour tone and enhance the colour expression”.
That sentence uses the words ‘intentional’ and ‘enhance’ but they seem in opposition.
LG says this feature understands the colour science of filmmaking and adjusts it for greater impact but is that saying the purple jacket the Joker wears in The Dark Knight isn’t quite as purple as one would like, so it needs to be made more purple? Or maybe the intense contrast of colours in a Michael Bay film could be even more intense? And would this enhancement suggest that the normal picture modes are less interesting or flavourful by comparison?
At least you can turn it off, and there is Filmmaker mode for picture accuracy, but it’s an addition that feels like integrating AI for the sake of it. A reason to jazz up the picture that’s eye-catching to an end user who wants prettier pictures, but not the use of AI in keeping with the creative intent. If a shade of orange is meant to be that way, why enhance it?
It seems to take away from the philosophy of good ol’ picture tuning. Sony’s TVs are all about respecting the creator’s intent, to the point where Standard mode for its latest TVs is closer to replicating what a film or TV programme would look like on a mastering monitor. Similarly, Panasonics OLED TVs have been colour tuned in collaboration with Stefan Sonnenfeld, the eminent colourist for Hollywood films, having worked on Top Gun: Maverick, Gran Turismo, Tokyo Vice, Nightmare Alley and many other film and TV productions over the years.
These approaches lend credibility to respecting the creator’s intent rather than trying to add tweaks where none are needed. I think there’s a feeling from TV brands like LG and Philips that while they’ll respect the creator’s intent with dedicated Filmmaker modes, they’d also prefer more razzmatazz in other picture modes because it differentiates them from other TV brands. It’s true to say that if everyone did the same thing, picture quality wouldn’t be that interesting, but AI enhancement of the creative intent seems an unnecessary tactic to me.
Panasonic is not against the use of AI in its processor, but the way it is utilised is relatively low-key – a case of using it to recognise what you’re watching and switching the settings to fit. Roku’s US TVs will feature a similar setting. That’s ultimately not driving the picture quality you end up seeing on screen but switching TV modes so you don’t have to.
For me, these are the type of solutions I’d like to see with artificial intelligence – reducing the hassle and automating processes that take away from enjoying your new TV. If not integrated efficiently, AI could end up taking centre stage when really it’s meant to be a supporting actor.
