Today was the beginning of a new adventure for us in 6th grade English! We shared in a wordless picture book, each made meaning of our own, & represented those with foil sculptures. We chalk talked to connect those meanings with our classmates’ & with our English adventure ahead.

As of 4:30pm, here's how much rain the radar estimates fell across the metro. Yellow/orange areas are 1-2", reds >2" and pink is >3".
Looks like northern Shelby Co has a right to file a grievance, though we weren't too far off with a 50% chance today! A little low in fact...

Fifth grade kicked off our remote learning adventure this morning with familiar faces and loads of excitement in ‘virtual homebases!’ We loved the chance to start our day with something “normal-ish” — and to continue leaning into the community that’s supported us all year long.
@hutchisonms In our reflection on @NCRMuseum back on campus, the girls were excited to find connections in their own ideas, to one another, and to our current Global Studies and English conversations! It’s exciting to see these girls growing as community-minded thinkers.
One of the best parts of @hutchisonms is the way our girls love to cheer each other on. Two of our 5th grade fall athletes got all the love from our homebase this morning! 🐝

“Y’ALL, I see [this] in the text, and so I’m inferring [this]!” 👏🏻👏🏻 Hooray for connections, @JennSchope! And hooray for fun! (2/2)

The last day before fall break is making for the best chance to put on our detective hats and put this quarter’s skills focuses to the test! We’re circling back to inferencing, text evidence, and author’s intent to crack a bank robbery mystery. So many squeals, so many, (1/2)
It’s a happy teacher moment to see my girls growing more and more comfortable with slowing down and looking closely. Their thoughtful talk about our mentor sentences is stretching from noticing the whats to debating the whys. Writers learning from writers!

Today was a good day to think reader’s workshop with some of our TAIS colleagues! Put me in a car with @JennSchope from Memphis to Nashville, and the ideas for reading and writing with our girls spin fast (and maybe a little wild).
Naturally, I woke up to my husband wearing my outfit from yesterday. (A little #whoworeitbetter anyone?)
Two married teachers makes for some weird moments. And @hutchisonms Disney Day just before @cmdsmemphis Book Character Day has probably left our neighbors wondering.
My favorite nugget of the conversation so far: “Yeah, it *is* an exclamatory sentence, but is that what you meant for it to do??” These @hutchisonms writers are pushing deeper than the “rules” to more critically consider end marks and sentences’ messages. Happy teacher, here!
These writers have been asking, “What makes a sentence a sentence?” To hear each other’s thinking, we had a little walk and talk around @HutchisonSchool campus — perfect for finding visual metaphors representing our initial ideas of sentences!
Back in the classroom, we thought about our readers’ experiences with our sentences. The girls looked closely at mentor pieces to consider how we might choose end marks that most meaningfully move our readers through our writing. (@writeguyjeff #PatternsofPower inspired!)
