Canadian financial regulators aren't known for innovative thinking, but on January 1, 2022, they revealed something new—the Trusted Contact Person (TCP).

It sounds boring (because it is), but as the baby boomers age and financial scams increase faster than the candles in the cake, the TCP is an important client protection framework.

In 2014, I received a call from one of my widowed clients.

She was in a panic.

Her insurance company had just knocked on her door and suggested if she didn't rip up and replace her brand-new laneway, they would have to cancel her home insurance because "it violated building codes."

She called to request money from her investments so she could pay the construction company her insurance company told her to use to fix the problem. But something didn't feel quite right.

Not once but twice over the previous three years, she had been the victim of scammers. One was a water filtration system she paid $1200 for but sat under her sink, never connected to anything (and she had no idea). The next scam was a water heater she "had to install to meet the city's new codes." Of course, it came with a massive monthly cost and a contract nearly impossible to cancel.

My client had clearly been identified as an easy mark.

My guess is the same scammers were circling back every 12-18 months with a different and more costly scam.

This time, they were after $32,000.

And this is why the Trusted Contact Person, while boring in title, is truly an exciting initiative for someone like me who works with the always aging population of retirees.

Not be confused with a Power of Attorney; a Trusted Contact Person is someone your financial advisor can call when they believe you might be the victim of a scam or perhaps your own bad judgment as a result of mental decline. The TCP you designate is not privy to your financial information, nor can they act on your behalf.

Think of a TCP as your “emergency contact.”

The person someone like me would call when you ask to liquidate all your retirement accounts because your "grandson is in jail and needs to be bailed out with gift cards purchased at your local Shoppers Drug Mart" or when "CRA suggests your income tax account is in arrears and you need pay with Bitcoin."
