Here, my colleagues & I compared the cross cultural representation of death in Western and non-Western media during the Oct 7 attack and Israel's war on Gaza, by examining ~4,500 photos by six outlets (1)

One of the interesting findings (& there are many!) was how VOA deviated from the British, German & French outlets in its reporting on death + dying, further problematizing the treatment of Western or non-Western media as monoliths.

To do so, we used a hybrid methodological approach that involved training an AI model on a preexisting coding instrument, and going through multiple refinement rounds to reach an .89 intercoder reliability level based on Krippendorf's alpha. (2)

Mothers and elderly women displaced by Israeli strikes in Lebanon are skipping meals and going without medicine, the UN warned on Friday, as nearly one fifth of the population have been uprooted from their homes.

One woman recalled to Reuters the psychological shock of being unable to give birth with her doctor after she was displaced by the military campaign. Another warned that newborn babies are unable to access adequate medication at sprawling displacement centers.

At least 620,000 women and girls, including those from Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian communities, have been forced to flee their homes, the UN women’s agency reported Friday.

Women are skipping meals so their children can eat, the UN Women representative in Lebanon, Gielan El Messiri, reported Friday. Older women are unable to access medication for chronic health conditions, said El Messiri.

One 64-year-old woman in the south recalled nervously stepping outside her home after a wave of bombing to find collapsed houses lining her street in Majdal Zoun.

"No one was left in the village. I got out… And found collapsed houses,” Khadija Youssef, who was displaced at a school-turned-shelter in Tyre, told Reuters. “There were only about 10 to 15 people from the civil defence. They told me to wait and that they would drive me, and then airstrikes and warplanes returned, and I got scared.”"
