Now looking like "Backrooms" will open this weekend to around $85 million. And "Obsession" will gross around $28.5 million, up 19% -- the first wide release to grow its box office two weekends in a row since 1982. What can I say but !!!!!!!
Blumhouse-Atomic Monster has the #1 and #2 movies in the country this weekend, both made for almost no money. Theaters are packed. What a time to be making scary movies.
It's looking like $27m-$30m for #Obsession this weekend, another increase in Week 3. I'm at a loss for words for the phenomenal, unprecedented box office performance. Heading to a potential $200m domestic gross. @FocusFeatures@blumhouse@jason_blum@UniversalPics .
Not trying to pick on you @ScottDMenzel, but LOL that only days after you post this #Obsession goes on a generational surprising box office run. Hope this one qualifies! =)
‘OBSESSION’ is expected to pass $80M worldwide by tomorrow.
Which means if every dollar was laid end-to-end, it would stretch roughly 7.6 million miles.
That’s enough to wrap around Earth 305 times.
305 is also the runtime of the movie in seconds multiplied by the number of vowels in “cinema.”
Meanwhile the $750K budget means the film technically made back its cost once every 48 seconds since release.
Adjusted for inflation, lunar gravity, and vibes, this makes ‘OBSESSION’ the most efficient conversion of oxygen into profit in entertainment history.
do you understand what happened to obsession..
a 26 year old former youtuber made a horror movie for $750k. it opened to $17.2m on may 15. then something happened that hollywood analysts called "really unheard of"
second weekend grew 30%. Every single horror movie front loads, every movie loses 50-70% in week 2, and this one went up.
- best sophomore weekend for a horror movie ever recorded, beating the record heart eyes set last year
- on pace to cross $80m worldwide in just 10 days, already 100x its budget
- a24 handed curry barker the entire texas chainsaw franchise with extraordinary creative control before the film opened wide
- blumhouse already shot his follow up with aaron paul and bryce dallas howard
it cost less than the catering budget for the mandalorian and grogu
Obsession is the ONLY wide-release horror film on record to grow in its second weekend at this scale — $22.4M, up 30% over opening. This doesn't happen in horror. Grateful to Focus Features, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, & Divide/Conquer for championing this movie from the start.
> be obsession
> horror movie made for $750k
> drop in theaters may 15
> tracking $8m opening weekend
> open to $17.2m instead
> hit $30m in week one
> top box office monday tuesday wednesday
> beat michael, devil wears prada 2, mortal kombat 2
> first sub-$1m budget film to top box office in 17 years
> last one was paranormal activity in 2009
> second weekend forecast up 29% instead of dropping
> on pace to be 4th sub-$1m film ever to cross $100m
> already made 40x its budget
studio executives at warner are pacing the room wondering why $200m superhero movies can't do this
i had a reservation to see Grogu this weekend at AMC Empire, last night they emailed me that they had cancelled my showtime. i checked to see what was playing on that screen at that time instead and it’s Obsession, with about 3x as many tickets sold
@DiscussingFilm Ummmm, The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal activity blew that out of the water, almost $200 million box office each, with less than $100k budget.
