@silmara_furtado @LatinXChem Sadly, General Chemistry is a course with a great amount of DFW nationwide, but if we identify the major struggles before starting the course and help them to correct it, we can lower those numbers and help to increase the STEM workforce.

@silmara_furtado @LatinXChem We are working on designing a course that could address students' identified deficiencies before they start general chemistry. Our university has a mathematical Immersion program to level up our students' math knowledge, but I believe some basic math is necessary to reinforce.

@silmara_furtado @LatinXChem We can work on targeting their math weaknesses, such as pinpointing them during problem-solving discussions.

@silmara_furtado @LatinXChem Yes, our next step is to collect that data. We believe students' backgrounds or circumstances help them get better or lower scores in the course.

@silmara_furtado @LatinXChem I hope these findings and the method to be developed and perfected can identify the students at risk in General Chemistry and give them extra support before or during the course. Sometimes, we see that the students' problem with chemistry is not chemistry; it is mathematics.

@silmara_furtado @LatinXChem For students at UPR, the MUST or the math part of the entrance test alone predicts grades for 56-59%, but using both works for 70% of students.

@LatinXChem En mi caso, mi investigación busca desarrollar un método que permita predecir la nota de la población que atendemos pero podrían utilizarse para otras poblaciones latinas que tengan características similares.

@LatinXChem La prueba MUST se puede ofrecer en 15 minutos sn calculadora a los estudiantes antes de comenzar el curso. Esta prueba MUST, puede ayudar a identificar algunos tópicos algebraicos que los estudiantes no dominan y asegurarse de en la discusiones de las clases incluirlo.
