30 years ago this month I began hosting Big Band Spotlight on @SoDakPB. It’s been a great joy sharing this marvelous music from the 1930s and 40s. Plenty has changed over three decades, but I’m still swingin’.
I don’t want to hear Christmas music until the middle of December. But today is the centennial of the great blues pianist and singer Charles Brown, so I’m playing his timeless Christmas classic. https://t.co/9rx157FVKE
@WBGO Just five? Well, I suppose:
Ellington - Blanton/Webster Band
Mingus Ah Um
Ella in Berlin
Weather Report - Black Market
Tito Puente - Dance Mania
Other than Ellington and Mingus, the list will be different tomorrow.
As I celebrate Wayne Shorter’s 89th birthday this evening on Jazz Nightly, I remember a great night in 2002 hearing him with his quartet. Back when CD cases were a great place to save ticket stubs.
Les Singes Volants return to Jazz Nightly this evening for a live performance celebrating the 5th anniversary of SDPB’s Black Hills studio. Music begins at 8, CT; 7, MT.
I was saddened to hear about Butch Thompson’s passing earlier this week. I’m featuring some of his wonderful piano playing this evening on Jazz Nightly.
