Military bases are helpful to threatened and endangered species. These bases tend to be reservoirs for biodiversity because they are not designed to be cities or be used for agriculture purposes. The bases preserve land for animals and plants. #militaryecosystems #ees028

The St. Francis Satyr is a rare butterfly that resides near a military base in Fort Bragg, N.C.. Artillery training kills some of the butterflies, however the disturbance helps the populations survive too. This tends to be common at military bases. #militaryecosystems #ees028

The seed vault in Norway holds the largest collection of food crop biodiversity in the world. It serves as a resource for the future just in case a disaster happens and crops are wiped out. This is one of the most interesting things I have seen in this course. #seedvault #ees028

Using in vitro fertilization to produce cheetah cubs has been worked on for 15 years and is a big deal for the science community. This was important to do because cheetahs are already listed as vulnerable and they are difficult to mate naturally. #inVitroCubs #ees028

Sudan was the world’s last male northern white rhino. There are two female northern white rhinos left, but they are not capable of reproducing. The hope is to use the eggs of the female rhinos and fertilize them using Sudan’s sperm. #RIPSudanRhino #ees028

Marius was a male giraffe in the Copenhagen zoo. He was killed because the zoo wanted to prevent inbreeding and they felt it was better than letting him live in bad conditions somewhere else. This story is beyond sad and there’s so many ethical concerns to it. #zoo #ees028

Prairie dogs are extremely important to their ecosystem. Recently, they have been exposed to a disease called the sylvatic plague. Scientists were releasing peanut butter pellets infused with a vaccine that targets the disease. #ferretdrones #ees028

Rhinos are endangered due to poaching. People believe that the horns of rhinos have medicinal value, however this is false. Educating people about this fallacy may be helpful in diminishing poaching because it may reduce the demand for #rhinohorn . #ees028

The Florida #grasshoppersparrow is an endangered bird that is only found on the prairie of Central Florida. They almost got wiped out in floods that hit the prairie, but they were rescued. They’re doing well in captivity, but need to be reintroduced to their habitat. #ees028

Operation Migration was both a success and a failure. Whooping cranes were able to learn how to migrate, which was the goal. However, the birds were not independent or knowledgeable enough about the wild to know how to protect their offspring. #cranesplanes #ees028

During the Great Depression, people used to eat Gopher tortoises also known as “Hoover's chickens”. They have a slow reproductive rate, therefore their population sizes have not been able to return back to normal. #wildlifebusiness #ees028

In Georgia, businesses want to help Gopher tortoises, however they do not want the tortoises to be listed as endangered. Listing them under the Endangered Species Act will cause restrictions for business and this can result in an economic loss. #wildlifebusiness #ees028

People don’t know if they should change the bird’s status on the list. The birds are heavily reliant on the government conservation efforts that provide controlled fires and artificial cavities. States are not able to provide these efforts on their own. #ees028 #redcockaded

The #redcockaded woodpecker was one of the first species to be listed on the Endangered Species Act. Their habitat was being destroyed due to logging, development, and wildfire suppression. Bringing fire back and artificial cavities helped recover the birds.

In 1969, the Cuyahoga river of Cleveland, Ohio caught on fire. Citizens are not necessarily proud of the river catching on fire, but they embrace this tragedy because it is a symbol of strength.

In 1948, a deadly smog covered Donora, Pennsylvania. This smog remained for 5 days and killed many people. While many avoided talking about this tragedy, it is now something citizens are proud of because it led to the Clean Air Act. #smogdeath #ees028
