Just five seasons ago, Purdue Fort Wayne was at rock bottom, finishing with a (1-22) record, including just one win in conference play. Fast forward to today, and under fourth-year head coach Maria Marchesano, the Mastodons are on the verge of back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in program history.

Before Marchesano took over, Purdue Fort Wayne had won just 14 games in seven seasons, averaging only two wins per year. The program was stuck in a cycle of losing, but that changed the moment she arrived.

In her first season, the team took a step forward with six more wins than the previous year, including five conference victories—the most in nearly a decade. The next season, they hit 14 wins overall and nine in conference play, marking their first double-digit win season since 2013-14.

The real breakthrough came in year three. The Mastodons won a program-record 23 games, including 13 in conference play, a nine-win jump from the previous season. Compared to where they were before her arrival, that’s a 22-win improvement. That success earned Marchesano a contract extension, and now in her fourth season, the team is reaching new heights.

Sitting at (18-5) overall and (13-0) in conference play, Purdue Fort Wayne is on track for another historic season. They’ve already tied last year’s conference win record, and if they keep this pace, they could set new program marks for total wins, conference wins, and even punch their first-ever ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

Even in their losses, they’ve been competitive. Two of their five defeats came against Power 4 teams with an average margin of just 11 points. The other three? A one-point loss and two overtime heartbreakers.

Marchesano has completely changed the program’s trajectory, turning a perennial bottom-feeder into a serious mid-major contender. Now, the only question is how far they can take this season.
