With the extended extreme cold expected this weekend, our heating systems will be working overtime. Understanding how they work is key!
Inside your heat pump is a backup source of heat often referred to as emergency heat or auxiliary heat. Though the terms are often used interchangeably, they are very different. Auxiliary heat is automatic, supplemental heat (electric coils) that helps a heat pump in very cold weather when it struggles to keep up.
Emergency heat requires you to physically move a switch or press a button to put the thermostat into emergency heat. Emergency heat relies solely on the backup, which is a major drain on electricity. Emergency heat is the most expensive way to operate your heat pump and it should only be used when absolutely necessary.
Thank you for your patience during last week’s winter weather. Staying off the roads helped crews safely treat streets across BG.
Since Jan. 24, all 12 snowplows have operated 24/7, plowing 10,000+ lane miles despite extreme cold. Please use caution and allow extra travel time.
