Radical IPL trade thought: Rashid Khan ↔ Hardik Pandya
Sounds wild. But from a squad-construction lens, it may be one of the few blockbuster trades that actually solves problems for both GT and MI.
GT’s issue is not top-order batting. They already have Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Buttler. In 2026, Gill and Sai alone crossed 600 runs each, and GT still finished in the top two. The problem is the middle-order/all-round balance at 5/6/7.
Hardik fixes that immediately.
Indian batter. Seam-bowling option. Finisher. Former GT title-winning captain. Local/Gujarati connection. Ahmedabad comeback story. And most importantly, he frees GT from the overseas slot squeeze.
GT could then go: Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Buttler, Washington, Hardik, Tewatia / finisher, Holder, Sai Kishore, Siraj, Prasidh, Rabada
That XI suddenly looks deep, balanced, Indian-core heavy, and flexible.
Now look at MI.
MI badly needs a bowling identity beyond Bumrah. Rashid with Bumrah would be terrifying: Bumrah controls powerplay/death, Rashid controls the middle. Oppositions are no longer attacking 20 overs — they are surviving 8 elite overs and attacking the rest.
Yes, Rashid’s economy is no longer at its peak in 2022. But context matters: IPL scoring has exploded. Average run rate has gone from roughly 8.5 RPO in 2022 to nearly 9.8 RPO in 2026. Rashid’s wickets are back in 2026. The issue is not ability; it is opportunity cost at ₹18 cr. That is why the trade is fascinating.
GT can replace spin by committee: Sai Kishore + Washington + matchups + auction. But they cannot easily buy an Indian pace-bowling all-rounder who bats at 5/6.
MI can sell the move to its fans as ruthless squad correction, not failure: “We tried the Hardik leadership reset. Now we rebuild a Bumrah-Rashid bowling spine.”
The blockers are obvious: player consent, MI optics, captaincy politics, and Hardik’s own willingness. But cricket-wise? This is not crazy.
It is a 9/10 cricket idea and maybe a 4/10 real-world possibility. Wild? Yes. illogical? Not at all. Can GT make the phone call? Or should MI?

Erik Ten Hag: Took over the worst United team in PL history, 7 1st teamers left the squad, dealt Harry Maguire playing situation, the Ronaldo situation, the Jadon Sancho, improved several players performance, bought great 1st team players, NOW has to deal with Greenwood. Respect.
What’s next? Justice Thomas has already mentioned three cases that need to be "reconsidered" in light of overturning Roe: Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. These cases dealt with contraception, privacy in the bedroom for consenting adults, and same sex marriage.
Verstappen has got to be the luckiest F1 champion. Completely undeserved. Rules on safety cards and tyre changes make it a complete.mockery. #FormulaOne
So if the @fia just reject the appeal… because they could literally just do that… they’re not impartial. What next? Legal action?! #wtf1@SkySportsF1@CroftyF1@MBrundleF1
All we heard was we want hard and fair racing and to win it that way… making the sporting regulations up as you go along and putting the second placed car on 40 lap fresher tyres than the guy who had dominated the race is not fair racing. #AbuDhabiGP#skyf1
It would be such an FIA move to give Verstappen a 5 second penalty for “overtaking” under a safety car just so they don’t have to admit they broke their own rules with the safety car procedure #FormulaOne#AbuDhabiGP#WTF1
