Giant African Land Snails in Kerala are a health hazard. They carry a parasite that can cause eosinophilic meningitis, a severe, potentially life-threatening inflammation of the brain's lining.

The snail itself isn't the virus; it’s a host for "rat lungworm" larvae. The parasite is shed in the snail's thick mucus trails. If these snails crawl over your backyard garden or open water sources, they leave the invisible larvae behind.

Transmission happens via contaminated food and water, or handling snails without protection. Children under 5 are at the highest risk, often from touching the snails or infected mud out of curiosity and then putting their hands in their mouths.

Prevention tips:
❌ NEVER touch or crush snails with bare hands. Use gloves.
🧼 Thoroughly wash and scrub all backyard vegetables and fruits.
💧 Always boil drinking water completely.
🚫 Clear clutter and damp debris from your yard to reduce breeding grounds.

Eradication: Don't just squash them. Drop them into a bucket of salt water (brine) or a bleaching powder solution to eliminate them and their eggs safely. Create a barrier around compound walls using lime or tobacco dust to keep them out.
