I think I knew that I had arrived as a Postie when, maybe my first or second day, Marty came in for his evening shift and made his customary walk through the newsroom, greeting every reporter by name as he walked to his desk. He stopped at the new guy, read my name plate. From that day, every day around five o’clock:
“Shane, hello.”
“Hey, Marty!”
This ritual marked each day, like a bell tolling, and made me feel instantly at home.
As a reader: losing the Maryland schools reporter in the middle of a massive redistricting project in Montgomery County is a loss many suburban moms/dads like me are going to feel fast and hard.
I’m among the hundreds laid off today by The Post. It was a dream to write about education for @postlocal. I don’t have answers over what future coverage of Maryland schools will look like. If you have job tips, please send them my way
extraordinary - the post's stated emphasis is national security
who will cover Iran/Saudi? Israel? Hamas and the future of Gaza - and given US policy how all these things affect national security?
I was so lucky to work at the @washingtonpost for more than a decade, alongside tenacious, world-class journalists. I know how deeply committed the staff is to the mission of holding power to account, and how much grit and bravery they bring to unearthing stories that would otherwise go untold. The loss of so many journalists is gutting for all of us who care about The Post and its long history of independent, rigorous reporting.
Yeganeh's reporting on Iran has been riveting and vital these last few months. I may not get to read her reporting in the @washingtonpost anymore, but I just preordered her book. https://t.co/dfps7xFQjE
I'm heartbroken to announce that I've been laid off from my position at The Washington Post. Working at this newspaper, and especially being a foreign correspondent covering Iran and Turkey over the last few short months, was a dream come true for me.
A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."
NEWS: The cuts were so severe that at least one department head asked to leave The Post rather than be included in the planning.
Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

🚨☀️BREAKING NEWS (personal… and bittersweet): After nearly 11 years, I'm leaving POLITICO.
I’ll always be grateful to this place that taught me how to cover Washington. It’s been a fun ride. But ultimately, the company and I were on divergent paths — and it just made sense.
I’m *stoked* for the next chapter and to build something new. More on that coming soon…
