100 Harvard University alumni issue a statement condemning "police brutality, unlawful detention, and violations of constitutional rights of all peaceful protestors" in Delhi on October 10.

They particularly express solidarity with Sr Adv Shadan Farasat (2009 Harvard Law School alumni) who was manhandled by the Delhi police, and CJP Policy Head Mehr Pasricha (Harvard Kennedy School, 2025) who was detained.

"We call upon the government and all law enforcement authorities to immediately cease and desist from all violations of constitutional rights, respect rights to peaceful protest and access to legal assistance, and ensure that those responsible for abuses are held accountable in accordance with the rule of law," they demand.

There are several videos that clearly show how the right wing extremist goons have been let in to unleash violence against the youth with active support of police in Delhi. In one video yesterday, the police tells the goon who assualted the young girls and boys that a journalist is taking a video and therafter he goes to abduct it. After lot of expose on social media, a couple of these right wing extremist goons have been arrested but what about the police who aided them?

From Godhra to now, the modus operandi of the Modi administration has been similar. That is to allow such right wing extremist goons to act unconstitutionally, unleash violence and assault the ordinary citizens. And while this happens , the entire police administration is asked to look the other way thereby aiding it.

Manhandled, dragged, assaulted n misbehaved inside a police vehicle and dumped by the roadside - for the crime of speaking to the media.

This is not merely an assault on an MP. It is an assault on democratic freedoms and the rule of law. More chillingly, it happened within hours of the Supreme Court issuing directions to safeguard peaceful protest and constitutional rights.

I have written to the Hon’ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn , the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha @VPIndia and the Chief Justice of India seeking urgent intervention and fixing accountability for the police personnel, and action on the question of parliamentary privilege.

The Government cannot intimidate democracy into silence. It cannot substitute the force of the baton for the force of debate. And it shouldn’t expect the people to surrender their constitutional freedoms merely because those in power find dissent inconvenient. The strength of a democracy lies not in its capacity to suppress dissent, but in its ability to address it.
