This year, Canada and Germany celebrate the 75-year anniversary of their mutual diplomatic relations.
🌐On June 6, 2026, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-Canada participated in the Symposium: 75 Years Canada-Germany Diplomatic Relations held at University of Ottawa and organized a panel discussion with two experts from University of Ottawa, moderated by KAS.
Dr. Althusmann started by bringing back the memories of June 6, 1944, D-day with landing the allied troops in Normandy, the decisive and turning point of WWII and noting that after the war, divided Germany was looking for reintegration into international community towards its Western partners, beginning with exchanging of ambassadors between Ottawa and Bonn, the capital of West Germany at the time.
🤝Since then, diplomatic relations have constantly improved, which led to trusted partnership between Canada and Germany.
🗣️Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Director, Dr. Berndt Althusmann, accompanied by Ottawa University Professors Daniel Stockemer and André Lecours, was leading a special session on Konrad Adenauer's legacy as the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, particularly laid down in the west-integration of Germany fighting for peace and freedom.
The panel discussed democracies around the world facing polarization, populism and disinformation or the threats by autocratic states to democratic institutions today. They also addressed the role of middle powers, the goals of the Canada-Germany partnership and the meaning of freedom that is everybody’s choice referring to Konrad Adenauer's quote: "We choose freedom".
On June 4, 2026 Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-Canada participated in the conference on Strengthening Euro-Atlantic Defence Integration.
🎯Panelists emphasized that the most effective response to the current security environment is deeper defence cooperation between Canada and Europe, with strong relations to Germany. The discussion focused on moving beyond traditional political alignment toward practical integration in defence production, procurement, security cooperation, and industrial capacity.
Speakers argued that neither Canada nor European states can efficiently meet emerging security challenges alone. Closer cooperation would enhance collective resilience, strengthen deterrence, and reduce vulnerabilities in an increasingly uncertain strategic environment.
A recurring theme was the need to integrate defence industries across the Atlantic.
🗣️Panelists highlighted opportunities for: joint defence procurement, co-development of military technologies, shared supply chain, increased interoperability of defence equipment and greater access for Canadian firms to European defence programs and markets. They stressed that new robust security architecture is required to oppose countries like Russia or China.
Dr. Althusmann emphasized that a stronger NATO and a more united Europe are essential to addressing today's security challenges. He highlighted the importance of increased investment in emerging defence capabilities, particularly drones and cybersecurity, while also stressing the need for strong diplomatic ties between Canada and Europe. According to Dr. Althusmann, defence cooperation should extend beyond military capabilities to include enduring political and strategic partnerships.
He also noted that international defence trade is not simply about purchasing equipment. Rather, successful defence procurement should be viewed as an opportunity to build long-term partnerships based on trust, industrial cooperation, technology sharing, and shared strategic objectives. In his view, defence trade can serve as a foundation for deeper collaboration between Canada and its European partners or middle powers in times of uncertainty and the “new world order”.

🌐On June 1, 2026, at Ottawa University, Konrad Adenauer Foundation Canada and The International Political Science Association, co-hosted a conference on Canada and its Transatlantic Relations celebrating 20 years of IPSA in Canada and 75 years of Canada and Germany diplomatic relationship.
The years’ partnership and collaboration between KAS-Canada and IPSA have been based on supporting democracy, political education and international dialogue.
📢The panel composed of diplomats, academics and policy makers addressed the theme Canada and its Transatlantic Relations and sought to create meaningful exchange between academic and policy perspectives on Canada’s engagement with Europe and the wider transatlantic community amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and pressures on multilateral cooperation.
The roundtable participants were discussing the strengths and meaning of middles powers, emphasized the links and strong connections between Canada and Europe, mentioned the importance of CETA and energy security.
They also addressed current and future Transatlantic partnership challenges between Canada and Germany in the world of uncertainty and global shift, remembering at the same time geographical factors.
🗣️Dr. Althusmann spoke about economic, democratic and security resilience and highlighted that Germany is Canada's strongest ally in the areas of economic cooperation, stable energy access, and critical minerals, and holds a particularly important place in this relationship. As Europe’s largest economy and a central “player” within the European Union and NATO, Germany has become one of Canada’s most significant partners across climate policy, research, and innovation.
The roundtable speakers referred to “new world order”-the term Mark Carney used during his state visit to China and in Davos, Switzerland, describing fundamental, permanent shift in global geopolitics and trade.
The panel concluded that time is needed to see what the new world order will look like in the future.
