Let me give you my honest, unfiltered take on this WAEC fee “suspension.” Call it a theory if you want, I call it reading between the lines.

They did not suspend this fee hike because their conscience caught them.

WAEC has been running deficits for years. N6 billion deficit in 2023 alone. N5 billion loan just to buy calculators.

Lawmakers grilled them over it in 2024 and WAEC would not even hand over their bank statements. That kind of financial pressure does not disappear because Nigerians complained on social media for one week.

So why back down so fast? My theory is simple. This was never about listening to parents. This was about optics. The N50,000 fee is already scheduled for the 2027 exam cycle, which lands after the February 2027 election anyway.

So technically they did not even need to protect the election timeline, the numbers already worked in their favour.

What I believe actually happened is different. NAPTAN pushed back, NUT pushed back. Atiku used it as ammunition. The optics were turning ugly at a time when this government cannot afford another anti-poor headline going into election season. So they pulled the letter, called it a review, and bought themselves silence for a few months.

What I am saying is that this fee comes back. Maybe not N50,000 exactly. Maybe a compromise figure dressed up as consultation, N40,000 or N42,000, something that lets them claim they listened while still landing the bulk of the increase.

The underlying deficit has not moved one naira. WAEC still needs the money. The government still is not fully paying its subvention obligations. The pressure that created this fee hike in the first place is still sitting there, waiting.

This is Nigeria’s playbook. Announce something painful then watch the outrage. Retreat publicly, then return quietly once the news cycle has moved on. I have watched this pattern too many times to call it coincidence.
