#COPÂ meetings are a key part of the worldâs attempt to tackle #climate change and drive the #energytransition forward, but there are concerns about the process and who should host it.
Current #COP29 host Azerbaijan has been criticised for using the summit to boost its fossil fuel sector and for cracking down on dissent. Zhala Bayramova, a human rights lawyer and the daughter of a political prisoner and Anna Bohushenko from NGO Climate Action Network join @KiraTaylor15 on The Jolt to discuss their views on Azerbaijan as the COP host.

"Why Iâm optimistic about the energy transition", @janrosenow
In early November 2024, Jan Rosenow, Vice President and European Programme Director at the Regulatory Assistance Project (@RegAssistProj ), delivered a keynote speech at Euroheat & Powerâs Summit in Brussels.
In the speech, Jan gives his views on how the #heating sector is shaping up to the #decarbonisation challenge.
He explains why he is optimistic about the #energytransition, citing the example of renewable energy deployment in Germany and argues that new technologies are often underestimated.
Jan also discusses why district heating is a key solution for decarbonising heat.

The #urban#heatisland effect occurs when cities become significantly warmer than their rural surroundings, which puts an extra strain on the energy system because people are using increasingly more air conditioning to keep themselves cool.
More energy use also means higher #greenhouse gas emissions, which are making the #climate problem even worse.
Clara Camarasa, Ph.D. from the @UNEPCCC discusses how the urban heat island effect is hurting communities worldwide and shares some of the solutions combatting it.

This framework proposes a three-step approach: reducing heat at the urban scale, minimizing cooling needs in buildings, and adopting efficient cooling technologies.
In the first week of #COP29, countries agreed on new rules for trading carbon credits - a crucial part of the Paris Agreement that has stalled for nearly a decade.
How do these new rules impact #climate action and are they finally ready to go? Eve Tamme, managing director of advisory group Climate Principles joins @KiraTaylor15 on The Jolt to explain more.

Last week, the Swedish government announced that it will cancel 13 planned #offshore wind projects after the military raised concerns.
Emelie Zakrisson, head of offshore wind at Swedish developer OX2, joins @SamJamesMorgan on The Jolt to explain what her company thinks about that decision and where Swedenâs wind sector goes from here.

In July, the United Kingdom saw a major political shift as the left-leaning Labour Party returned to government for the first time since 2010. The administration has put forward a new budgetâso does it live up to its energy and climate ambitions?
Sam Kimmins from Climate Group, an international non-profit launched in 2004 that works with business and government to drive fast climate action to find out, joins @KiraTaylor15 on The Jolt to examine the greener details of the Governmentâs economic plans.

Miami is one of the most visited cities in the United States. However, it is also one of the most exposed to the impacts caused by climate change, which include the loss of land and drinking water sources due to rising sea levels.
Jason Grant, Ph.D. from Miami-Dade Countyâs local government joins Sean Carroll on The Jolt to discuss what measures are being considered and implemented, from planting mangrove trees and installing floodgates to electrifying vehicle fleet s and setting up carbon markets.

Countries in the European Union need to roll out an updated law to bring their buildings in line with the blocâs net zero emissions target. But EUnations have a mixed record when it comes to implementing renovation.
In Wednesdayâs episode of The Jolt, Kira Taylor looks at how to roll out a law to renovate Europeâs leaky buildings.
Stefan Moser from the European Commissionâs energy department joins The Jolt to explain what countries need to do and what the new top Commission job for housing and energy will entail.
âIn many cases, the investments in the building stock will pay off, so thereâs a positive case for them. The challenges are mostly practical, so itâs not a kind of situation where doing something on the building stock is against the national interest,â Stefan Moser, Head of Unit, DG ENER

Our Head of Energy @CMaarfield spoke with @KiraTaylor15 on why achieving net zero emissions by 2040 in the EU will bring socio-economic benefits of up to âŹ1 trillion đ đ° as carved out in our new #PACscenario.

Thanks @Foresight_CE !
In todayâs episode of The Jolt, @KiraTaylor15 looks at a new report that finds net-emissions is possible for the EU by 2040, plus the United States and shipping slip behind on meeting their climate targets.
The European Union is entering another five-year term as the need to tackle climate change grows more crucial. As part of this, it needs to stay on track to meet the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming.
NGO Climate Action Network Europe wants the EU to do that by hitting net-zero emissions 10 years early. Its new report lays out measures it could take across different sectors to make that happen.
Cornelia Maarfield, head of energy at the NGO, joins The Jolt to discuss the report and the groupâs energy compass, which looks at what it wants the EUto do over the next five years to up climate ambition and limit global warming.
âAccording to our modelling, we need to achieve a 72% emission reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2040, so we are actually achieving climate neutrality 10 years earlier than what the EU is currently planning to do,â Cornelia Maarfield, Head of Energy, Climate Action Network Europe.
