Dr Arday's death evoking a lot of complex emotions in me.
I came online tonight to see Ghanaians and Black Africans weaponising the announcement of his death today to pontificate.
Sheesh.
Irrespective of whether he was hero or villian, I'd say to people all day every day: do not underestimate cancel culture and media pile-ons.
Some of you have no idea what it feels like to be the token Black person in white dominated rooms. To be the only Black (dont even get me started on African) feeling all the pressures I cannot begin to talk about in white dominated environments.
Your accent is a problem. Your skin colour is a problem. Your passport is a problem. Your mannerisms? Problem. The sarcastic takes. The double entrendres. They say A, but you dont know whether they mean B. And on and on.
The veiled "did you really do this work?" when they really mean "you couldn't have thought of all this awesome work, could you?"
Listen.
When you even say something unpopular on just your own social media with 1,600 friends and followers, the backlash can traumatise you and your loved ones for a while.
This guy 289 articles written about him in 19 days.
289.
Not on some wayside blogs. This was full blown national coverage. In the British media. Arguably the most vulturine group of media in the word.
Every single one of those pieces gutting him. Not to mention the TV, radio and social media swarm.
All for what? An academic offense?
Academic offenses are usually dealt with in the academic community. When did you last hear a plagiarism issue blown so bigly on such a coordinated, national scale in such a back-to-back-to-back manner?
Can you cite a recent example? I'd go one further: one that involved a white person? Wall-to-wall mainstream coverage?
It will break anybody, especially if you are not built to withstand such onslaught.
As I always say, the very day you become a public figure, have a close circle of loyal people who know you know you know you, who will provide comfort when the shit hits the fan, because... inevitably, shit happens to everyone.
He may have plagiarised, yes. But, bro, Jason did not kill anybody. The bastardization was waaaay out of kilter with what it should usually be.
Remember, all this started because some guy said Jason could not be as good as he claimed because "Black people would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment".
Never forget that.
May he rest well.
