Former Republican Congressman Joe DioGuardi explains how Albanians who fled the Ottoman invasion and settled in Italy built a significant castle, anticipating that the Ottomans might eventually reach Italy's shores.

The area where the castle stood is known today as Calabria. The name comes from the words "Cal" (Kala, meaning "castle" or "fortress") and "Abria" (Arberia), which together mean "The Castle of Arberia" or "the castle of the Albanians."

The Turks did arrive on the shores of Calabria, as predicted, around 1525. However, by then, their army had been weakened by decades of battles with the Albanians, who had been desperately trying to thwart the invasion. Although Albania fell to the Ottomans, their forces were defeated in Calabria and never advanced further into Europe.

For many of us, witnessing the recent Islamic invasion of Europe is shocking, especially since our nations still bear the scars from the last Ottoman invasion.

DioGuardi's parents were Arberesh, a community of Albanians who were forced to leave Albania in the 1450s to escape the Ottomans and to this day live in Southern Italy.
