Sri Lanka to Introduce Extended Producer Responsibility Law for Plastic & Polythene

♻️ Plastic and polythene producers will be legally required to collect and take back their own product waste to prevent environmental pollution.

♻️ Mandatory Collection Targets:

● Year 1: Collect 50% of production
● Year 2: 60% of production
● Year 3: 80% of production

♻️ The bill will be presented in the next Parliamentary session.

🌱 Producers will now be held accountable for the plastic waste they create.

Flood alerts issued as heavy monsoon rains continue across Sri Lanka 🇱🇰⚠️

Flood Risk Alerts Issued for Kelani River, Kalu Ganga & Attanagalu Oya Amid Heavy Rains

The Irrigation Department has issued multiple flood warnings as heavy monsoon rainfall continues to impact several parts of Sri Lanka.

Authorities warned that the water level of the Kelani River is rising, with a risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas of the Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dehiowita, Eheliyagoda, Yatiyanthota and Bulathkohupitiya Divisional Secretariat divisions during the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Kalu Ganga has also reached elevated levels, raising the possibility of minor flooding in floodplain areas including Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, Elapatha and Kiriella in the coming hours.

The Irrigation Department further warned of a minor flood risk along the Attanagalu Oya due to continuing heavy rainfall.

Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures as the South-West monsoon intensifies across the island.
