When the geneticist Marlena Fejzo was pregnant for the first time, she felt sick almost immediately. She lost 15 pounds. She went to the emergency room twice to receive I.V. fluids. Two years later, she became pregnant again. She couldn’t eat, drink, or move without “violently vomiting.” She shrank to less than 90 pounds, becoming so weak that she needed a buzzer to communicate. Eventually, she had a feeding tube placed.

She was suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum (H.G.), a disease characterized by extreme nausea and vomiting. Kate Middleton, Amy Schumer, and millions worldwide have been afflicted with the condition. Studies show that the disease occurs in up to three per cent of pregnancies—and the real incidence may be even higher. Still, scientists who research the condition, including Fejzo, have struggled to obtain funding. Those who experience the debilitating condition have long been dismissed, shamed, or accused of faking their symptoms. Fejzo’s research has recently identified a gene responsible for H.G.
