Coming soon: THE GOOD SALT GIRL (Fall 2026), my sixth book and first grown-up novel. Dead houses, the deep sea, love, and roadtrips. Rep'd by @TransLitAgency.
Sitting in sun with a muddy face and a beer: the world is extraordinary. Look around. We have sweet tarts and jumbo jets. We know about atoms and Purple Rain. We crawl into storm drains to save kittens. We try. There’s so much to learn, so many fried egg sandwiches yet to eat.
This is how it felt to be diagnosed with MS. We've all got bombs like that—they may or may not go off, but at some point, you'll be told about it. Ushered into The System, there's only one best way to respond.
Thanks, Jocko. New post on the new Substack:

New on Substack: Books are an intellectual face tattoo
We change, but we can't change our books. That's why we need to write new ones.

Hey! I'm on Substack. https://t.co/yjRVbqKxs0
THE PACK is essays on what I carry with me for a creative body, mind, and spirit. Sign up for posts by email or follow along if you’re already a Substack reader. Shiny like a brand-new penny.
@CGProgram Oh man, that's lovely. So nice to see you here, I've been absent a long time. I hope you're kickin' it as usual. And yeah it's been a ride. Don't know if this will pop in here the right way but here's the sum-up. The ten-cent tour is that I feel good. https://t.co/ZdPbPpNsJB
First up on THE PACK: I out myself as a grumpy old man. Is modernity working for us, or against us? Help yourself, if you like grumpy old men.

There’s more to come on second puberty, the lonely virtues of being disagreeable, the license of an empty house, and the longest labour I’ve ever endured. And plenty of good stuff. It’s not only for and about grumpy old men.
But I liked writing about grit, modernity, nostalgia, the bodily experience, and writing, and about why so many us of suspect something has gone sideways in the way we live. I wanted a place to put it. I stalled, and stalled, and then, finally: Substack.
@simonsarris I am in a moment of forced transcendence and this little string of thoughts meant a lot to me. Thanks.
We don’t truly take on grace until it becomes urgent via bad news or trauma (actual trauma). We meme about grace but we don’t practice it. Until … blammo!
We're here for such a short period of time. Live like you're already dead, man. Have a good time. Do your best. Let it all come ripping right through you.

@mechanical_monk I’m fascinated by the generational shifts. Many a dreamboat, tough-as-nails Gene in this bunch. And Gords and Dons and Franks. All the modern-day Tylers in the world can only aspire.
@duodickinson You and your sweet nothings.
There is no sleep as solid as the sleep of having spent the day moving a few loads of the earth in one form or another from one spot to another spot, and making a beautiful and functional thing in the meantime.
