Macmillan Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - Palliative & Complex Cancers @WWLNHS Graduate of #olderpersonsfellowship @KingsNursing. Views my own.
Important findings for managers and policy writers ➡️ Improving access to primary care by reducing constraints on access during typical work hours could improve population health. Full article: https://t.co/GOS2f9nXO3
As #SLT’s we regularly talk about good mouth care as part of eating, drinking and swallowing recommendations. Day 1️⃣2️⃣ #evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas is a review of NICE guidance for oral care management in care homes 2016.
Day 1️⃣3️⃣ #evidencebasedcounydowntoChristmas The EURIPIDES study (Evaluating the Use of Patient Experience Data to Improve the Quality of Inpatient Mental Health Care) https://t.co/M3fNuspLzz
Great agenda for the @WWLNHS Community Research & Audit Event. Staff and academics from @edgehill and @ManMetUni speaking on innovative practice and a break with poster presentations and Athens support. Not too late to book on! @hadley_lesley@AmanjsSwift@WWL_NHS_PET
This systematic review of #dysphagia interventions for people with #dementia raises more questions than answers but highlights the need for further research - links to other articles in our series on informed consent and involving people with impaired capacity in research.
Day 1️⃣4️⃣ on our #evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas
and we are looking at: A systematic review on dysphagia treatments for persons living with dementia (Wun Chan et al 2024).
On day 1️⃣5️⃣ of our #evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas we’re sharing this great resource. The @AphasiaLibrary . First saw this on Bluesky and found their account here. Helping make research accessible which should help embed research in practise. #aphasia#slpeeps
8️⃣ today we’re reading ‘Predictive Value of the New Zealand Secretion Scale (NZSS) for Pneumonia’
(Miles et al, 2017) #evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas
A @BiozoonUK pint at the Rovers!
Nice one #corinationstreet highlighting an option available for those with #dysphagia that can’t swallow. My patient (who’s trialled Biozoon) saw it - visibility can be great for acceptance and integration.
⁉️⚠️ Advice needed⁉️⚠️ our provider for electrodes for surface electromyography (sEMG) is no longer supplying them. Where are #slpeeps buying their electrodes from now? #dysphagia@RCSLT
To protocol or not to protocol? The #VFS question! ✅reduces clinical variation ✅better study comparison✅validity ⛔️can feel un-patient centred ⛔️ feeling of screening unnecessarily ⛔️ differing protocols for MBSImp & DIGEST so locally adapted. We’re looking at ours ⬇️ 👀
Day 4! Found this really useful for considering protocols, balancing radiation exposure with enough trials for diagnostic accuracy, we’re looking for a pattern to the dysphagia.
While further work is underway with regards to #VFS protocols, the authors advise DIGEST requires a protocol sufficient to show patterns. As a minimum: 5-6x thin fluids, 1x #IDDSI Level 4, 1x IDDSI Level 7
Day 3! Motivating evidence for using #EMST to rehab some oropharyngeal dysphagias. But putting this into practice requires review of funding pathways - are local SLT teams absorbing the costs? #EMST150#evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas
3️⃣ Expiratory muscle strength training improves swallowing and respiratory outcomes in people with dysphagia:A systematic review (Brooks, McLaughlin & Shields 2019)
2️⃣Predictors of aspiration pneumonia: developing a new matrix for speech and language therapists (Ball et al 2023) #evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas 🧵
Want to read along with our #evidencebasedcountdowntoChristmas? The advent calendar you didn’t know you wanted. First up, one for if you’ve ever thought, now I wonder if that would look different on…*alternative instrumental swallow exam*?
Use of DIGEST for personalised care @livHeadandNeck. @kahutcheson with the reminder that not all aspiration is the same. Tailoring SLT intervention based on grade. Research to be published showing expectations of oral intake at each grade.
